im thinking of putting a 89=91 13bt in my 85 gsl that i got for free it has no eng. or trans. in it right now.

just want to know a list of parts i may need or problems i might run into. if anyone has done this swap before please let me know if its worth it.

z-beater 06-21-2007 11:35 PM

No, no one has ever done that swap before. Lead the way!

hahaha j/k do a search, there is an actual swap section on this forum. Take a read through it and come back with some more specific questions. Welcome to nopistons.

people have been putting the 13b into 12a cars since the 13b came out!

on a 1st gen you need to get an oil pan, front cover, racing beat makes a 12a to 13b crossmember....

rotary@<3 06-22-2007 11:44 AM

what about engine management will the stock ecu and wiring harness from the s5 work in the fb. if it does what mods do i have to do to make it work

z-beater 06-22-2007 01:33 PM

You will have to re-wire the car to accept the S5 TII harness. And yes the stock ECU will work.

Or you can spend about 1k and just put a PFC in there. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif

It is a FD computer. But it will also accept a S-5 harness. You need an S-5 harness or S-6, FD ignitor, Fd ait, FD map sensor, the rest can be S-5 electronics. You have to repinn the harness a little bit, Wire in the ignitor, power up the harness yada yada. I think I was like the 2nd or 3rd guy to do it. Cheap standalone. I actually did a qucik thread on it over in the nw section when I did my swap this winter. Search for standalone for less than a grand. The power fc is a great computer, that lots of rotary shops can tune.

**** I plugged in the computer, zeroed it out, started up the car, then I drove it 160 miles to portland to get tuned. Which is awesome, because I know alot of folks who have to trailer their 7's to the shop for a start up tune.

OK here you go

rotary@<3 06-23-2007 10:43 AM

the pfc you were using in your swap is that for a fd or fc

z-beater 06-23-2007 11:22 AM

FD

rotary@<3 06-23-2007 10:10 PM

ok my next question is where can i find the wiring diagrams for the gsl and s5. or maybe someone who has in detail posted how to wire in the swap

Racer X 06-25-2007 06:50 PM

Heres the wiring for the S4 T2 which is similar aside for the electronic OMP part.

Main harness wiring(S4 T2)

Look at the plug as it were pluged in the ECU.

Wiring diagrams can be found here, along with most of the rotary FSMs, carb manual, etc..

http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php?page=rx7manual

or here: http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/cars/rx7/manuals.html

trochoid 06-26-2007 02:50 AM

Is the swap worth it, most definitely. Search and read through Steve 84gs post on the subject over at the RX7club forum. If irrc corectotly, there is a pinout thread in the 1st gen archives.

rotary@<3 06-28-2007 09:08 PM

ok well thanks for all your help i think im going with the pfc. so i wont have to mess with that stupid afm. if you happen to come across any more info let me know cause im going to need all the help i can get.

z-beater 06-29-2007 12:56 PM

This is a side project, right? It will take a considerable amount of time to finish.

Expect to spend no less than 4k for start up. More like 5-6 if done right with a few mods(ie PFC and tune).

rotary@<3 06-29-2007 07:14 PM

it is a side project. but i have a few parts lying around i got the car for free and i can get the pfc for less than 800 and an engine and trans for 1000. and i have a 255 fuel pump and racingbeat has the oil pan and cross brace for 200, soim hoping to get it runnning for no more than 3000 but if i have to spend more oh well as long as its done right

z-beater 06-29-2007 08:55 PM

Yeah it is the small stuff that gets you. If you are getting a PFC don't forget the tune. That will run you another 400-800 depending on the tuner.

There is also other small things that you might want to consider. Boost gauge, wideband, upgraded rad, FMIC... oh, and better tires.

There are some things that you are also forgetting like s5 harness, coils, TPS, FD igniter, FC fuse panel, new spark plug wires and other small little items. Trust me the list goes on and on.

Also it is reccomended that you upgrade the fuel lines as well. I do not know the diameter of the gsl lines but if you can get fuel lines off a gsl-se you will be set.

A great place to buy the pfc is jappartsspecialties. Heard nothing but good things from them. There is a shortage of FD pfc's right now so the wait is a little longer than usual. Price is 690+shipping through them with a commander.
