hello everyone

I have a couple of questions

I recently inherited from my father an 82 RX-7

his goal when he was alive was to basicly return this car to Showroom condition mechanical as well as visually

The main problems that i'm having with this particular vehicle is the Tach and the Rear end.....

a little history

the tach used to work till we had to change the distributor after that the tach ceased to work.

Next is the question about the rear end....

I do know that my father had installed a diff from an 85 because it's an LSD

now the deal with this is there is a whirring sound coming from it when making a right turn the sound goes away when making a left the sound is a little louder....I took it to a mechanic that had worked on my vehicles in the past he stated that it might be a bent axle does this sound right to you guys??

oh yeah another if you guys don't mind too much

front brakes after installing new rotors and pads

when coming to a stop sounds like a semi stopping......however i know that the brake pads are secure any ideas on that too?

any help would be greatly appreciated.....

also anyone know of Mazda specialists in the Orange county Area?

Tach problem? Hmm... not sure. I believe it hooks up to the trailing coil.... but I could be wrong. You should probably pick up a Factory Mazda manual or at the very least a Haynes Manual. You can buy a Haynes for dirt cheap on eBay.

About your LSD rear..... I'll betcha if you drain the oil and install a high-grade gear oil with a good friction modifier the noise will go away. I had similar noises from mine but after I installed RedLine 75w90 it went away. RedLine ain't cheap but I swear by it. BTW, RedLine MT-90 in the tranny is a beautiful thing.

Front brakes.... 1) be sure to install the backing plates on the pads 2) use "stop squeal"... you know... the blue stuff.... between the backing plate and the pad and 3) make sure the upper piviot point of the caliper is well greased and slides easily.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your car!

Nice you got a 7 but im sorry for your loss,

Ok im pretty sure the tact is ran of one of the ignitors...I have a Hayes and dont have time right now to look it up...sorry..Since you said you had distribitor work..check around there for loose connections or crimped wires...

Ok now you didnt say much about the rear end from the 85....

What rims are you running?84/85s are know to have better rear ends..bigger axles..BUT I think you have a GSL rear which is geared @ 3.90 and yes its a LSD if your using the normal..4 star Mazda rims..

I have heard people tring to add Amsoil or Redline for a quick fix...BUT to me,what you describe sounds like a bad bearing...

If your really concerned pull the differentual out and check for metal shavings or bad bearings...I dont think its a bent axle..you should have disc brakes in the rear..and if you dont notice any hopping while driving or stoping then you should be alright..also have some one ride next to you and behind you in a diffrent car to look for any wobbles...

Ok about your brakes...

Maybe you have alot of glazing on the rotors you didnt say you turned them ..also use some kind of anti squeal on the back side of the pads...I personally like the spray blue Permatex...

Also you can get this liquid you put on the pads it self..let it soak in and it suppose to help with the squeal..

Well post back and let us know whats going on..

Well thanx for the kind words guys i'm off to autozone to get a repair manual

I found out that on the Rear end only the gears were swapped and still using the stock axles.....I also talked with my brother and he had said that using 2 other sets of gears that the rear-end was still making the noise which by process of elimination leads me to believe that it's the bearings

Well after digging through some of the paperwork on the car I found out that my father had taken the car in 4 weeks in a row to one of the worst places to get brakes done PEP BOYS so next week i'm gonna take the car back to them and finally get the problem taken care of......

I''l have to ask the meat what the deal was, but something puked on his 84 and the tach went out, was a simple fix.

Sorry for your loss, I'll think some happy thought for you tonight!

Pull the top plugs, see if they are firing.

If they aren't there are two igniter boxes on the distributor, one of those is bad... or both. Which will cause the tach not to workie.
