so heres the deal...

the last owner of my car had an aftermarket stereo system installed (new head, and i think 4 new speakers). when i looked behind the head unit there were all kinds of disconnected wires. so i think whoever installed the new system just bypassed the old system and re-wired everything, but left the old wires and crap there.

that takes me to my question...

i removed the storage bins and found all this (see the picture). what is it all? what is stock? what is new? what can go?

ps. the silver box (amp?) has a Clarion sticker, and the brass colored one has a mitsubishi symbol stamped on it.

thanks again,

joe

The clarion box (or boxes, mine had 2) is an amp. You can get rid of the clarion amp. I took out the door sills, center console, and kick panel and pulled the cable to the amp out. The mitsubishi box is for the car. Leave it. You can get wiring kits to use the stock wiring. That would be the easiest way to go if you're reinstalling a CD player. At least use the power, accessory, ground, and power antenna from the stock wiring system. You can run new wires for speakers. I put speakers in my door panels instead of the kicks since kicks only hold 4". It doesn't take long to get the carpet up to run wires underneath. If I'm not too lazy maybe I'll go take pics of the stock cabling that I took out so you can see what all can come out. I work the next two nights so it will be later int he week before I get to it.

There are 2 clarion boxes, one on each side of the car.

The mitsubisi box is for the cruise control. Ditch it if you've already lost the cruise.

i bypassed my stock wiring bc the old wires suck but when i got to the cd player install i realized that the install kit i got didnt match up to the stock connectors anyway. the stock wiring runs through those amps which would be fried if the power from an after market unit went to them, and if the power did get through the amp to the speakers they wouldnt last very long with that amount of power

moral of the story: run all new wires, id never done it before and it took me 2 or 3 hours and i was going really slow. it will only cost you about 20 extra bucks

actually the cruise still works fine, so i think i'll keep that around.

there already are all new wires, just there are old wires too. i guess whoever installed the new stuff was too lazy to get rid of the old crap. well anyway im gonna install an amp and sub in the passenger side storage bin (not in the bin but where the bin was) so i think i'll wait until i do that to pull up the carpet and get rid of all the wires, but those amps are goin now.

hey if you are gonna take a pic of the stock wiring, you wanna get me some pics of the speakers in the door sills? i was lookin to do somethin like that myself sometime (sometime=when i get the money, and get some other plans out of the way)

thanks

I have since redone the baffle rings to make them more round. Actually I used rings I made at school with a router so they're really smooth. I haven't covered them up though. I'm too lazy to finish my install. The speakers are all I have right now because I have to find some power wires in the dash or run new wires for the CD player. Running new wires will guarantee that you don't get any accessory noise, but the stock stereo power wires are almost always fine. I had to cut a little bit of metal from teh door behind the panel and, of course, some of the pocket. You'll have to space the speakers from the door panel with a baffle like mine unless you have some reall really thin speakers. I also flush mounted the tweeters higherup in teh door which involves further destruction of the door panel. I'll try to remember to take better pics of the doors too.

I went out to the shop to see if I could find my original wiring. My dad organized teh shop so now all my stuff is stored in our old trash cans. I just don't feel like digging through all that **** and possibly getting another spider bite right now. If I ever get around to selling my extra parts I'll have to go through it though. The large black connector in your pick is for the cable goign from the amp to the radio. The wire runs under the carpet in front of the seat IIRC. You just have to remove the door sills, kickpanel, and possibly the carpet panel on the left side of the console by the radio. Then pull it out being very careful. I can't remember if it's taped down or clamped down anywhere underneath. You may also have to loosen the lower console/armrest if it's tucked underneath that. you'll be doing most of this just to install the amp for your sub anyways so just leave everything you can out until the very end. The only thing you'll need to put back in is the door sills. I don't think you'll have to remove the armrest entirely. If I keep this car and redo my install I'll be sure to post pics on this forum.
