I'm putting all new speakers in an '85. I would like to get something bigger up front than 4inchers. Anyone care to share what they have done or seen?

I know that with some modding to the opening that you can stuff a set of 5 1/4" spearkers in there.

I have seen a few people that have made kickouts that allow for better sound quality. The stock location is horrible. I also have seen them in the door panel. Why not just get a good 4"?

I would like to get a little bass up front (impossible with 4's)and like you said, that location is horrible.

In my first 7 (not the one I have now) I added some spacers to mount 5.25 speakers (so that the magnet is all that really ends up in the old 4in hole, used long screws to hold them in, and then custom molded around it with screen/bondo to make the seal. It worked out very well, but I didn't like the extra bulk up front and it took a long time. In the new car I just got some very nice 4 inchers. I think it sounds better to have small speakers crossed over in front and get your bass out of the rears and a subwoofer anyway. You really can't percieve what direction bass comes from and it's a cleaner install. With a good amp and configuration you can have that type of 4+1 setup really thump and not have to "customize" the stock location or the doors.
