Recently shifting has started getting a bit touchy. If I try to shift into second at above 2000 rpm the gears want to grind, and it seems like this is spreading to 3rd gear as well. If I hover in a neutral spot for a few seconds it seems a lot less likely to happen, but still does on occasion.

Also, shifting into 1st or 2nd can be hard sometimes, feels like something is misaligned inside. I dunno if there are guides in there, but it when pulled to the left it seems to catch sometimes and doesn't want to go easily.

Anything I should check or have looked at?

generally if the shifting still stays bad/notchy with the engine off its a problem with the clutch/clutch hydraulics

if it stays weird with the motor off, its in the transmission

It sounds to me like the 1st to 2nd synchro is going bad. Does this also happen going into other gears? You said it seems to be spreading to 3rd. You should get the tranny checked out by a good shop, or if you are capable, check it out yourself. If nothing else, check the pan or filter for metal shavings.

I'll check it tomorrow before I start it up and see if it catches at all, I've never tried messing with it while it was off.

It hasn't tried to grind on anything other than 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th work real smoothly.

In the lower gears the shifting is pretty audible. It does make a sort of "chunk" sound when shifting into second, almost like something is falling into place kinda hard. It's a lot quieter going into third, and nearly silent going into 4th and 5th.

Meant to post this the other day, but I've been busy.

When the engine is off, it shifts perfectly into all the gears except reverse, which it will go into sometimes (I tried shifting whille off about 4 different times to make sure it was consistant). It isn't notchy at all when off.

When the engine is on, but not moving anywhere it'll go into all gears without grinding. Sometimes shifting it into gear causes the idle to become unsteady, wobbling between 700-1000 rpm until I shift it back into neutral. It is slightly notchy when on, but not as bad as when your moving.

At this point, it might be a good idea to either rebiuld or to replace. Trannys are not that expensive and they are cheap to rebiuld. While your at it why don't you do the clutch and flywheel? Save some time and energy and get the running gear in shape for some fun driving.

Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like I'm going to have to get my beater into running shape again so I can tear this one down. I take it a rebuild kit is fairly easy to come by?

If it is just a beater, I would find a junk yard tranny. Otherwise the bearings, syncros, gears (especially if they have been ground), forks (if needed), seals can be expensive. If you are going to restore or it has personal value, than I would rebuild.

I'd honestly like to restore it, being that it's in good shape body wise, but thats outside the scope of my cash flow for the time being. I just want to keep it running without really damaging it further for now.

I found what looks to be the same model sitting along side a road the other day. Drove by it a lot before but never had paid attention to it until I had a car that looked the same. It's not in as great of condition though from just taking a quick glance at it though, so I dunno if it would be worth getting for the parts or not.
