Bad bushings typically cause a lot of play in the shifter. When mine were bad, if I was in first I could move the shifter back and forth several inches. Super easy to change them though.

yeah theres a lot of play, but also some notchiness. when i pull up the boot there is black stuff that kinda looks like dried oil and the ball on the end of the shifter is oily looking

Dont forget to put oil back in the well when you change the bushings. And try to clean up as much of that black crap as you can. Lack of oil in the well will cause the shifter to feel notchy due to lack of lube.
