Hey yall, im getting into rx7`s my brother has an 85 rx7 gsl se, its in rough enough shape and barely runs, i would like to know how much horsepower these things have stock, i plan on rebuilding it, and making some nice horsepower, also how much mods will i need to get to 250hp?
Thanks shano` |
turbo.(and everything related to them)
|
Yeah 250hp will mean either a turbo or a bridgeport, if this is your first rotary project I'd suggest doing a stock rebuild, adding a full Racing Beat exhaust and K&N panel filter, and enjoy the resulting 160-ish hp for a while https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png
Then switch to a Weber carb for an additional 20hp or so. It'll be pretty quick then. Cheers J |
its got 135hp stock
|
yeah, im gonna be driving in a year or so, so i have plenty of time to learn, right now it needs a new exhaust, tie rods, interior, fan and some other ****.. But i was planning on starting on intake/exhaust then, turbos and the other stuff... Is there any good site you would recommend for 1st generation rx-7's? (parts)
|
|
Also, how much woulda a turbo cost? (canadian) I just got the new victoria british also.. but i need to know some price ranges... im gonna get some pics of the car soon also..
|
My turbo setup probably cost $2700 total, including the engine block w/ a transmission.
I'm about to drop another $300 in it for a racing clutch/pressure plate. The engine is so powerful that it just spins the stock clutch. |
good luck with your project man. AND I BETTER SEE A TURBO!

heres some pics, i just took them like 5 mins ago in the rain!! as you can see its not in the bestest shape, but its not bad and it runs...barely.. so your saying it coest 2700 for a turbo..ouchy.. |
Its the best $2700 i've ever spent on anything.
Trust me dood, you're gonna spend the same ammount on the car either way, so you might as well just save up and do it all at ONCE instead of over 2 years, and get twice the power you would. I calculated it out, i spent about 2 grand, maybe 2500 on the car, for exhaust, fans, this that the other thing, same w/ my black car before that. and i could have had a turbo setup the whole time..... Trust me, its WELL worth it. |
This is my Est. on how to get to 250HP
Hp--- Product ----------cost 5-----FAN---------------FREE 3-----AC----------------FREE 3-----AC PUMP---------FREE 5-----ALTERNATOR pulley-----$60 5-----MAINDRIVE pulley-------$100 20----RACING EXHAUST-------$750 20----STREET PORT CARB-----$750 OR GOOD TROTTLE BODY 33----EXTENDED STREET PORT @ 25%------FREE OR (400) with eng. out of car 5-----EMISSIONS---------FREE OR $50 15----LIGHTEN ROTORS, NEW SEALS, LIGHTEN E-SHAFT, SIDEPLATE MACHINED-------------------$1500-$2000----THIS HAS TO BE DONE BY A PRO JUST FOR 15HP 3------RACING MANIFOLD---------$300 5------PERFORMANCE AIR FILTER $50 2------COLD AIR INTAKE-----------$100 2------ROYAL PURPLE OIL----------$25 3------IGNITION-----------------$500 5------computer update -------Free if going with carb don't need it or $100 or less at scrap yard or $500 TOTAL est. HP 268HP TOTAL PRICE est. $5185 u.s maybe you can get these things cheaper or more new engine like this is $4500 est from mazdatrix this is a better way to go cuz they don't give you all the add0-on's did i miss anything anyone? or you can spend est $1000 less and add a turbo on it i don't recommend engine wont last long and might cost you more in the long run unless you can get these things done at a cheap price |
What do you upgrade the computer with in the GSL-SE? I thought the FC computers were the only ones that were "chippable". WTF?
|
Ya I dont recall much computerized engine components on an fb. The only computer upgrade I'd see is if you had a TII Swapped engine. Which accually by the looks of it might be cheaper than what you have listed. You could do a TII Swap, and upgrade the turbo (Among other things) and it would probably still be less than $4500 and Im pretty damn sure you'd make 250HP, if not more if done properly.
|
SAFC i think would be good for an ecu upgrade....
|
.... Again...
I have a TURBO prepped block (tii stock block), turbo, carb, etc, should be around 250 rwhp, for $2,700. |
alright thanks for the info, its just for 250hp and 5000, might as well buy a faster car.. lol.. but i dont wanna, i want his rx-7, i was thinking can 200hp put away a civic or any small ricer... also, iif i buy this car off my bro, hes probably gonna ask for like 250-500$.. im willing to spend up to 2-3 grand rebuilding it (cdn) tell me what i should do..
|
Rebuild what you have, do a mild street port (just get templates from Racing Beat or similar), get a full RB exhaust, and if the budget can stretch to it, switch to a Weber carb. That should get you a minimum of 180hp, possibly up to 200, more than enough to take care of any small rice https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png
Cheers J |
webber or if u want "ease" of use and readily available parts, a racing beat holley. im a fan of dual barrels personally.
|
So pretty much start by fixing up the car, (make it look nice) then intake/exhaust cardburator, anything else..?
|
Uh, yeah. Turbo.
Are my posts not showing up for you guys? I'm trying to tell you. For the same price as "rebuilding" the car, you could do a full J-Spec turbo swap for 250-300 rwhp which would be formidable against 3rd gens. My first race i beat a 3rd gen by several car lenghts, tho we both had bad runs. |
ya,but i dont feel like spending twice the money just for a turbo, i gotta rebuild it, with minor mods, after that ill be broke and probably cant afford a turbo.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif
|
Please go back and re=read EVERY ONE OF MY POSTS.
My setup $2700, INCLUDES A NEW MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION. its called "j-spec", you buy the engines with low mileage on them imported over from japan. http://www.nippon-motors.com http://www.corksport.com |
True, yes, you can do that. The thing is, you do not know the actual mileage on those j-spec engines, nor do you have any idea how they were treated, or any idea how long they will last. They might go for twenty years and you'd be laughing. Or they might blow up in a month (ask vosko!) and you'd be hurting - especially if you're a kid who's just spent his last dime on the conversion. I think shano will be better served by rebuilding what he has - he will 1) be able to be confident his motor will last a good long time and 2) learn much more about the rotary that way.
But he'll have to calculate risk/reward for himself on this choice. Cheers J |
Thats true, i rather just fix it up to stock, then add from there.. I rather just get alot of minor mods then eventually just add a turbo. i kinda want it to be a sleeper with rims.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif
|
Trust me u wanna do the rebuild like i added up top for the specs, then u wanna go turbo if F.I or a factory supercharger from any car ur 12a or 13b should be around 350hp then and 11-12sec 1/4 mile with stock transmission oh if getting supercharger better change transmission
