Rotary Myths
Hey all i have been messing with gen 1 rx-7 for about 1 and 1/2 years now and have heard many stories about the 12a can any 1 here verify if they are real or not some of the stories i have herd are.
Not to run synthetic oil in a 12a cause it dosent burn properly and wont lube the apex seals
10 minute warm up and 10 minute cool down and if not done apex seals will chip chatter or crack.
Please let me know what u think. Im not sure about the oil but i have always let my motor warm up and cool down.

i would say yep on the synthetic oil. the rotary injects oil into your carbs, which coats your chambers and rotor. if it doesn't burn off properly, well you'll have one hell of a buildup. and on the other one, i'd say hell no.10 min? 30 min. warmup J/K. I WOULD GET BORED TOO FAST WARMING UP THE CAR.

yah the warmup/cool down thing is bs.
so is the synthetic oil thing. it doesnt matter if it burns or not, its not there to burn it there to lubericate the seals. we have seen a couple of motors where synthetic was used and the rotor oil seal o rings came out looking really wierd

i ran synthetic for 2 oil changes or so on my 12a. i noticed a slight improvement, but nothing worth switching for.
btw, i used it at the reccomendation of Racing Beat.
i now use castrol GTX 20w-50

I'm an old timer, so I speak from experience. I have an RX-4 that I bought new in '74 and a REPU that I bought new in '77. Both are still running today. I can't believe it myself, as my wife thought I was making a big mistake with rotary engines. Anyhow, I use synthetic and regular oil in the rotary cars I own. They still run. My warmup ends with the choke pulling in.
