I decided to remove my 12a from the 84 today, but I ran into a little trouble. After I undid all the bolts, from the tranny and engine, etc I started to pull it up, but it didn't wanna let the tranny go. So I mounted it back up and looked in the hayes manual, which says I have to undo some bolts in the torque converter. I can feel 2 bolts behind the big metal cog, but I'm not sure they will come out that easy with the whole restricted hole access.

Does anyone have any exp with this?

Disconnected the driveshaft.....just get underneath and look is all i can say?

The engine should just part from the tranny without having to touch the driveshaft. You can get the engine out leaving the tranny in the car, apparently. Just before the tranny sump, where the tranny mates with the engine, the torque converter lives apparently. Through the small access hole, your suppossed to undo the bolts, but they're behind a big metal cog, which makes it kinda hard to get to them. I think I'm gonna need a weird-*** wrench to get to it.

yup you gotta unblot those bolts, or you could pull the engine and tranny at the same time

There are four bolts that hold the flex plate to the torque converter.

You have to remove one, then rotate the engine until you can get

to the next one. Do this until all four bolts are removed, then you can

pull the tranny.

Well, I just want everyone to know that I spent the whole f**king day trying to unbolt the 4 bolts connecting the flex plate to the torque converter. I found another access hole at the top and started undoing them. Talk about tight! I managed to get three off, without too much trouble, apart from having a sore arm, but the last bolt had to be one of those ones that never comes off. After different spanners, multi-grips and some $40 high-tech shifter from sweden, the bolt was well and truly rounded.

So, I figured I had to get it off regardless of the consequences (pulling the tranny out at the same time is not an option). So, like any other sane man, I got out the mini-hacksaw and proceded to saw the nut off the bolt. Then when most of the head was off, I grabbed my cordless and some grinding stones and ground away the remnants of the head till it was all loose and ready to come off.

Tomorrow is the day the 12a is reefed out onto the engine stand. Hooray :bigthumg:

Looks like as much fun as when I first pulled my POS 12a out.Are you converting to a 12a with a manual tranny after the resto is done for awhile?
