Check the plugs, then the distributor cap and rotor. My 85 SE was running like **** until I pulled the cap and rotor and then I knew why.

Sounds like the 115K miles on the chassis probably means a fuel pump that hasn't been changed in just as long. Replace the fuel filter in the back first. See if that helps. Check the ignitors next as described in your Haynes manual. If you don't have one, get one and then do the test. Try the car. Lastly, replace the pump. It's hard to test them because of a "kill" relay under the dash that won't energize the pump unless the engine is actually physically turning. I think that nonsense started in '81 because my '79s and '80 didn't have one. Right now, it sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem, but the jumping tach is a sure sign the trailing ignitor is getting ready to die... B)

Ok I been thinking this...You want a faster shift..Ok theres shops here in Tampa that can custom make a torque converter why dont you try to get one made before you to a 5 speed..
