alright folks, i just got my first car, and it's a good one. i've come into an 85 GS, with a new 12a in it (only 115k on the body, 12k on the engine) and i have a few questions. i've been reading up a little but i still wonder

a) when i let off the gas the car shudders a little...it's noticeable and just a little annoying - is that normal? the car is an automatic

B) what are the best performance modifications for my first generation, the best bang for my buck, (i'm just a high school student) i've already looked at all the performance pages, but i need someone to give me their opinion based upon personal experience.

c) what oil do you recommend i get it changed with? my brother uses mobil1 in his eclipse gs-t, but maybe i should go with something else??

thanks

ian

First, welcome to the rotary world.

Not real sure about the shudder that you are getting. You might have the U-joints checked. But I would definately say it is not normal.

Best bang for the buck is an aftermarket exhaust system. Headers and a free flow exhaust make the difference between night and day. Check Racing Beat or Mazdatrix for systems. You want to shy away from some of the cheapo mufflers. The heat that comes off these rotaries will melt the insides, causing them to clog.

As far as oil, I've known people who have used synthetic oil with no problems. I think that you will find that most rotary guys(and girls B))

use regular dino oil. Most use Castrol. I've always used Castrol 20W-50 with no problems.

Anyway, good luck.

thanks viper, i apprieciate it

another question, i'm putting a cd player in there, but i can only find the harness for the 2nd generation...what's up with that? will that harness work in the 85?

here's another question after going out and running with a g-tech.

i read that my car's supposed to run around a 10 second 0-60 and a 18 second quarter mile at 83 mph...the best i can get out of it under any circumstance is 13 sec 0-60 and a 20 second quarter mile  any particular reason why this isn't working out like it should? i'm assuming that the car is just so old, but maybe there is something i can fix.

treceb 08-07-2002 06:04 AM

with the harness, youre SOL. youre gonna have to do some rewiring there.

ive never used a gtech. but those numbers are close to a stock auto rx7. if yours is, go with what viper suggested. it should be a noticeable difference.

EmpDenied 08-07-2002 11:24 AM

do you know of any wiring guides or install pages for putting a stereo in there? i'm not exactly the best at the wiring thing. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

omfg 18 1/4

My best run is 15.6 on the 1320 ...and Im gonan run it again Tomorrow (Friday) and tring to get in the 14s and my engine is not ported..

Im gonan bring alot of ice with me ..to keep the intake cool on resting times between runs..Im gonan try to wrap the intake with a towel and ice ..colder gas..better runs..

SoRRoW 08-08-2002 12:01 PM

ooh **** @ EmpDenied

I didnt notice your car is an automatic..The car looks clean as hell ..and sweet..BUT an auto on a RX is very bad...you cannot get the power gains that you can at high revs like a 5 speed...keep the car clean..learn abotu them..and try to get a 5 speed

treceb 08-08-2002 02:01 PM

take it easy on the guy.

the numbers came off a gtech thingy, stock exhaust and its an auto. not that its a bad thing, but slower than a 5 sp.

Felix Wankel 08-08-2002 07:18 PM

I wouldn't put too much stock in the Gtech numbers, you have to get it angled just right and drive on a nice level road to get a good accurate reading.

I had to reread his post,I didnt know it was an auto on the first post..

Its nice though...

Congrats on the car, it looks real clean!

I'm just curious at what rpm does the tranny shift up when it is in drive?

You can always throw a k&N filter on there to help it breath a little better.

EmpDenied 08-10-2002 05:29 PM

floored the tranny shifts at about 5900, otherwise it shifts under 3000 most of the time...thanks for all the compliments people, i love the car myself, just wish it was faster.

EmpDenied 08-12-2002 05:10 PM

here's another question...a lot of the time after i start it it idles oddly, and drives a little wierd...the engine will pulse...if you look at the tach, it will jump a little then go back down then jump a little, at idle and just driving along...it goes away after about 10 minutes of driving, but i don't know what it is..is it a timing problem?

Turbo II 08-12-2002 05:26 PM

does the1st gen havea tps sensor. i dont know **** about them. if it does i would try adjusting it and see if that still happens. had the same problem w/ my TII and it went away when i adjusted the TPS correctly. Congrats on the car and damn it has a clean body.

Carburated wont have a TPS on it...It has a manual choke if it is stock..let it warm up..it will run about 3 k for 3 mins, then drop down ...I would recommend staying park and let it idle and warm up till you know what you are doing..

SoRRoW 08-12-2002 06:20 PM

If this happends after your engine is warmed up..then check your spark...plug /wires/ timing...

Carb adjustments..etc..

Pull the contacts on the ignitors and clean them. The tach reads off of the trailing ignitor, so you might get away with just cleaning that one. Pull the contacts off the coils and do likewise. It's a safe bet nobody's done it in the past decade... B)

EmpDenied 08-13-2002 04:03 PM

thanks for all the help and the compliments, but don't tell me about how sweet the body is, that's thanks to the old lady that owned it before me B)

EmpDenied 08-14-2002 11:08 AM

ok now i'm just distraught...i started it up today, and it sputtered..and it died...and it happened again...and again...and i waited, and came back and it started and i let it run for a bit, then put it died as i was backing out of my driveway

:(

phinsup 08-14-2002 11:15 AM

Check the plugs, then the distributor cap and rotor. My 85 SE was running like **** until I pulled the cap and rotor and then I knew why.

mar3 08-14-2002 06:32 PM

Sounds like the 115K miles on the chassis probably means a fuel pump that hasn't been changed in just as long. Replace the fuel filter in the back first. See if that helps. Check the ignitors next as described in your Haynes manual. If you don't have one, get one and then do the test. Try the car. Lastly, replace the pump. It's hard to test them because of a "kill" relay under the dash that won't energize the pump unless the engine is actually physically turning. I think that nonsense started in '81 because my '79s and '80 didn't have one. Right now, it sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem, but the jumping tach is a sure sign the trailing ignitor is getting ready to die... B)

5900?! Well there's yer problem. One thing about rotaries is they LOVE to rev! ALL the power is up in the higher RPMS. My car is pretty much a stock 85gs 12a at this point and it pulls REAL strong after 3500 up to 7500+ RPM. When I'm hard accelerating I always try to keep it to 7000-7200 max but she still wants to pull.

I did read it......I understand he's got an automatic...... his car is slow 'cause his auto tranny shifts too soon. I recommend that he convert it to a 5-speed.

SoRRoW 09-01-2002 10:10 AM

Ok I been thinking this...You want a faster shift..Ok theres shops here in Tampa that can custom make a torque converter why dont you try to get one made before you to a 5 speed..

i wish you could but i'm way over here in texas, man....a new problem...i started smelling fumes, and so i got her looked at, and i need a new muffler! should i go performance? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

SoRRoW 09-11-2002 04:43 PM

After market porformance muffler on a rotary will be louder than stock

EmpDenied 09-13-2002 06:00 PM

that's a good thing...as far as i'm concerned

EmpDenied 09-16-2002 08:43 PM

ok yet another question about the beloved GS...winter is coming soon, and a toyota supra and an infiniti j30 are taking both spots in the garage :( what is the best way to keep my car starting in the winter when it's going to be out in the cold?

SoRRoW 09-16-2002 09:00 PM

When* I had the manual choke set up on the Nikki carb you have to pull the choke out and let it runnuntill choke kicks back off...If you dont have a manual choke or no choke at all..You would have to let it warm up for 5-10 mins..I have no choke on my car..and it was to loud to let it idle at 2 k for 5-10 mins..thats why Im planning to park the 7 in the winter and drive my caddy

EmpDenied 09-16-2002 09:12 PM
