Hello again

I thought my car was getting back to normal...but we just towed it home

I drove it to school this morning and it was ok...just ran a little rough...but when I went to start it this afternoon I did the usual warm up and the choke kicks off...but my car just...died

I tried to start it over and over but it just kinda almost starts...sometimes it will..but even if I give it gas it lugs down till it dies

The only way it runs is with the choke out...but if I try to give it gas with the choke out it tries to die...instead of revving up...what could cause this?

I'm pretty sure its something to do with my carb by now...any chance I could get a holly to just bolt on...or would it be better to rebuild mine if I need to?

by the way...we took off the fuel filter and it was full..we even blew fuel out all over the ground...so its not clogged

thanks

Adam

Hey Falcoln, wooffinn here. Man you just can't win.Sounds like a problem somewhere in the idle circuit. Though the prob with it running with the choke on usually means it's not getting enough fuel.[with the choke flap on, it slows the amount of air flow though the carb and in turn sucking more fuel up though the venturis to add with the poor atomisation of the fuel/air mixture when cold] Sorry man if I'm getting too technical there!

It might be a good plan if you could borrow a known carb and bolt it on[ over here you usually need a adaptor plate to fit a weber or holley] and see if you problems go away. I've had a few carbs over the years where you can check everything and it all looks ok but the bastard just won't run, try a known good one and away you go! Internal cracks can occur and you'll pull your hair out and spend lots of unnecessary cash chasing it!

You can rebuild your factory carb but basically all the overhaul kits over here usually don't have all you need and the carb itself is quite a complicated unit to overhaul and I fix these things!

thanks much...Adam's Dad here...He says that for the past couple of weeks he has had problems. The car will be running fine...say 55mph...when it seems to loose power...then starts running OK. I agree that it's fuel problem. I'm thinking maybe the fuel pump is going out...??? or there's another filter besides the plastic inline filter by the rear axle..??? or he says there is some valve on the carb that's supposed to control fuel flow...??? It seems as though the choke is pulling enough fuel to the carb for it to idle and warm up, but once it opens, the suction stops and the car dies...any other suggestions? thanks.

Bob.

http://pittdp.homestead.com/underhood.html glad to see that your dad is helping, means alot...say you did check the fuel filter, should have replaced it while u were there, have you pulled off the fuel line from carb and checked for good gas flow while cranking, there is also a little check valve (metal) on the fuel return line from carb, flows one way check if it is working, have u rebuilt the carb. kit runs about 20 bucks, no need to take off carb to do just a simple cleaning and replace most parts and check float level while ur there, have u cleaned the dist cap. have u checkd spark with a extra plug u can pull one off the top and one off the bottom and check for spark to ground....dont get fustrated, you and dad can spend some quality time together and you both can share in the joy of fixing the car........good luck,,,,,
