Problem With 85 Gsl-se..
#1
Hi, my friend recently purchased a 85 GSL-SE , and it is having a very serious problem. 1st off, it seems to start and idle just fine, at a solid ~750rpm. Temp stays steady, oil pressure reading normal. When you try and rev the car in neutral, it will only go to about 5.5k rpm or so, then sputter and almost die, and will not rev any higher. When you attempt to drive the car, and it being under load, it does this at even lower rpm, sometimes as low as ~2500. It just stops revving and sputters. We have replaced: fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, cap, distributor. We checked the timing, and it is dead on. All of the plugs are getting spark. Could anyone shed any insight on what the problem may be? As of now the car is not drivable at all like this. Thanks

most of the time on these the high rpm power losses are fuel related (ignition is possible), there is a secret strainer/filter on the inlet to the fuel pump. its also psossible the fuel pump is weak

OK, i didnt know about the strainer on the pump itself. Is it the little white plastic dome thing on the end of the pump? Or is that something else? Also, Its not really a power loss, but more like it just wont rev past that point. The car shakes and studders something aweful. I can look into that strainer though..

Thanks for the suggestions, but will either of those things cause the car to not rev past a certain RPM? It varies under load. Also, when you 1st start the car, you can rev it to redline, but after that , when it starts to warm up, you can't. Does this help suggest anything?

It's my car he's talking about.
I contacted RC Engineering today, probably gonna send them my injectors. I'm not sure what else it could be really...I've replaced all the tune-up stuff, and I know my coils and ignitors are fine. The car gets plenty of spark on all the plugs. So hopefully pouring another $75 or so into my injectors will solve the problem. They send a detailed report back with them too, of flow rates before and after cleaning. So even before I put them in, I'll be able to see if it's going to at least help the situation.
Wish me luck.
