after gettin my car up on the lift, i noticed that my transmission mount on the passenger side of my '84 GS was resting on my exhaust and not attatched to the frame. The threads on the frame were stripped and i've tried a couple methods to fix the problem. I retapped new threads and used a new bolt, but the bolt ripped right out after removing the tranny jack. next i used a heli coil kit and ripped out the first heli coil after removing the trans jack, but the second one i put in held. A half week later i put the car back on the lift to check it out again and found to my dissapointment that the bolt came out again, and that i am also missing the big washer that fits into the mount.

I've concluded that the hole in the trans mount is not concentric with the threaded hole in the chassis. I intend to loosten all the mounting points of the engine and transmission and try to allign everything better.

My friend suggested making a bracket that will use both of the transmission mounting holes in the car (i think the other hole was for the automatic or -SE transmission) and mount it that way.

Has anybody had this problem before or know of a way to solve it? This is extremely frustrating.. I dont' want to drive my car until i get this fixed.

I had the same problem in my old GSL-SE and ended up making a whole thru the floor board on the inside of the car, putting a longer bolt thru along with a flat washer, lock washer and a nut, worked better than stock with less flex. Once you replace your carpet no one would be the wiser. Here is a pic of my floor board after I wrecked the car, you should be able to see the whole on the tranny tunnel, Im sure I could of done a neater job if I had the right tools at the time, but I just wanted to get the car running. I would suggest getting a thin long punch putting it thru the hole from the bottom of the car and striking with a hammer a bit hard so the indention will show thru the other side and be able to tell where to cut. You could weld and repair the floor board but if you change clutches or whatever you would have to access that top nut so I just sprayed some paint to keep it from rusting, and went for a drive.

I've already fixed the probem b4 i read your post, but thats exactly what i did, i cut a hole in the floor with a 1 inch hole cutter, and plugged it up with a rubber body plug, and i double nutted the end of the bolt. seems to be working well. Thankfully i have a parts car that i practiced on, i cut 3 holes before i got the placement right. I also swapped trans mounts because i found that the one i had on did not have the metal inserts that the parts car had. I think that was what the problem was all along.
