I havent had much experience with diagnosing clutch problems so maybe you can help me out. when i got my rex 6 months ago the clutch was pretty decent. i havent put that many miles on it but the clutch is slipping really bad. i am guessing that something might be wrong with the hydraulic system because the slipping is not consistant. like it always slips pretty bad but somedays worse than others like one day it might be so bad i dont feel like driving it and the next day it gets a little better. so you clutch experts....what do you think is the most probable thing that could have happened?

edit: on a side note, what happened to rx7club.com? it doesnt seem to be working. then i discovered this site and i noticed alot of the same people are on it.

ROFL! I noticed everyone I know from rx7club.com has 1 post, or so

Maybe upgrades or the blue screen of death (i don't think they run m$ though)?

As for your clutch problem... It kinda sounds like maybe one of your cylinders are going bad? They might not be fully releasing or somethin... Not sure though--this has never happened to me

it doesnt make sense that it would be just worn out because when i got the car the clutch was alright and i put less than 1000 miles on it. also, it doesnt slip different tho the powerband, just when i engage it.

You need to replace both the master and slave cylinders, bleed the lines. I have the same problem I just haven't gotten around to fixing it. These parts get old you know?

have you pulled the tranny and checked the clutch? heck, i've had one slip once, and the meat on the clutch was good, just smoothed out. so, being a broke 19 year old at that time, i grabed a triangler file and made my own grooves until it was rough. outlasted my engine that time. of course the engine don't last that long when your broke and can't afford oil.

It's your master and slave clutch cyl, hands down.

The reason I say "and" is because when one goes, the other is either also bad, or close behind. They aren't the most expensive parts on the car, and they're pretty easy bolt-out, bolt-in parts.

My bet would be that it's not a problem with the clutch disc itself, so don't bother pulling the tranny. This is a relatively common problem in our 20 year old cars! Just make sure to do both of them (with NEW parts like from Victoria British or Mazdatrix) and bleed the lines very well.

Also, if it's slipping right now, keep checking your clutch fluid level. When mine was slipping, the rubber boot on the slave cyl would sometimes release and let clutch fluid out, which let air into the lines and dropped my fluid level. Don't let your fluid level get too low!

Like any other pump-like or piston-driven/driving devices, they've got internal parts made of rubber and metal that wear down over time. My master cyl's internals wore down so that when you pushed the clutch, it wouldn't force any fluid through tht lines.. That's no good! Then I replaced the master, gave it a few pumps (as my friend watched the slave to see a reaction) and we noticed that every 3rd or 4th pump, the boot would pull back with pressure and squirt fluid out! So then I changed the slave too!

You *can* rebuild them, but at that price (less than a hundred bucks for both, brand new) it's not worth it to rebuild them. You'll get alot more milage out of the brand new ones, and you won't have to worry about them.
