The length and size of the port effects the Frequency tuning of the box. I do not like ported boxes I find they are usually very floppy and only good for "LOUD" systems *. A Sealed box will Genneraly have a good PUNCH to the Lows.









* I have heard some well tuned ported boxes that were very nice.

Porting is a science.



Most manufacturers can help you design the perfect ported system for your subs.



In my case, I called up Adire Audio and told them the amp I had (PPI PCX-2200) and that I wanted a ported box. They gave me the specs that matched my amp and my desire for SQL: a combination of SPL and SQ. My box is about 2 cubic feet tuned to 28hz. My sub can dish out lows like nobodies business yet still sound great while playing rock music, you know what I mean?

Ported vs Seales is like rotors vs pistons: the battle will never end. But never let someone who swears by sealed enclosures tell you ported boxes don't have excellent transient response...

This vented box doesnt hit anywher NEAR as loud as the sealed box, yet the sealed box sounded nowhere NEAR as clear and true bassy as this vented one.

Sealed will sound bad if the Size is not correct for the sub. But Sealed is the easy one to get correct. I have heard some Very good Ported systems but they were all at the ISCAA finals.







Have you ever used the Termpro Sound Meters and SW? I own a part of a Shop and I am thinking about getting one to test cars with.

Yeah you are correct about the sealed box being easier to build.



Designing a ported box can sometimes cause headaches. Hehe.



I have never been metered because I don't want to spend the money on a metering device...



ioTus: It sounds (no pun intended) like the box may not be correctly designed for your subs. I'm not saying you made a mistake, but by all means the ported system should most definitely be louder.

i put my infinity speakers in this morning, 6" in the rear and 4" in the front. they sound good, the only problem i had is that the speaker wells in the front were about a half inch too shallow. so they look like they are bulging out a little, but when i covered them back up with the stock speaker covers they look the same as before. next to go in is the amp and subs in the compartments.

My 5.25" infinities fit up front just fine as far as depth. Well, they are up against the metal but they still barely fit. However, the 6x9's in the rear, there's no WAY those things would fit. I had to make like 3" riser plates to get them to clear the rear quarter panels.

If I do any audio mods, I definitely won't be putting speakers in the back...the front soundstage is all that matters.
