I finally got my new subwoofer box in. HOLY COW, i've never heard a more clear sound system in a car before!!!

here is a pic of the box design (made by the local shop):

Your car is so ******* sweet dude. Seriously. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif Where'd you get the pillar guage pod? Are you gonna be at Rotofest so I can hump your car?

Dysfnctnl85 05-25-2004 09:35 PM

That a-pillar looks nice...I think I might try to put my gauges where my stereo was at one time...hah.

falcoln0014 05-25-2004 11:00 PM

Very nice...but I must say...those sub ports on the side...i've never seen anything quite like that...how does it hit??

My q-logic enclosure is sealed right now...has threaded caps covering the ports...but it hits so hard sealed i'd hate to open the ports

but I've also got them aimed almost perfectly at the rear hatch glass...they hit that glass SOOOO hard https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png

What size subs and amp are you running??

Looks like MTX on both of them...but whats the 2 boxes on the sides of your amp?...crossovers or something?

Really like those revere glow guages as well...they're tight https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Very nice looking interior for a 1st gen. KUDO's https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif

racerxtreme7 05-25-2004 11:29 PM

i second that, lookin good

ioTus 05-26-2004 01:29 AM

Hey thanks for all the compliments, guys!

1gendreemer: I got the a-pillar pod off a guy on another forum. If you want one i can hook you up with his email and he can send you one for $60 shipped. I live in Washington state, and altho i'd LOVE to go to rotofest, its a looooooong ways away!! (further away than sevenstock, even!)

falcoln0014: I was surprised to see the side ports as well, actually. I just wanted him to build the best SOUNDING box he could for my subs. It doesnt hit nearly as hard as it used to with the shitty sealed box that you buy pre-made. It used to rattle your bones when you turned it up, however, now it perfectly plays ANY note, at ANY frequency, at ANY volume. I've never heard a car audio setup that can clearly articulate bass notes and sounds like this one can. its really amazing, i had no idea it would sound this good.

The center amplifier powers the sub woofers, and then there is another amp on each side, one powers the front speakers, one powers the rears. This gives better sound control, heat dissipation off the amps (instead of one 4 channel amp, i have two 2 channel amps).

As it is right now, the subwoofers are only running on half the power of the amp, because they are not the ones that perfectly match it. (they only pull 500w RMS instead of 1000w RMS)

treceb 05-26-2004 07:34 AM

very nice indeed...i think u need to tint that rear glass.

TyresmokinRx7 05-26-2004 10:52 AM

Very nice ioTus, I miss my FB and the power she had.

Dysfnctnl85 05-26-2004 12:04 PM

FWIW, porting yields higher SPL...but ports are more than just holes.

ioTus 05-26-2004 02:06 PM

OK? care to indulge more information? you've got my interest. i'm always looking to learn new stuff about audio

The length and size of the port effects the Frequency tuning of the box. I do not like ported boxes I find they are usually very floppy and only good for "LOUD" systems *. A Sealed box will Genneraly have a good PUNCH to the Lows.

* I have heard some well tuned ported boxes that were very nice.

Porting is a science.

Most manufacturers can help you design the perfect ported system for your subs.

In my case, I called up Adire Audio and told them the amp I had (PPI PCX-2200) and that I wanted a ported box. They gave me the specs that matched my amp and my desire for SQL: a combination of SPL and SQ. My box is about 2 cubic feet tuned to 28hz. My sub can dish out lows like nobodies business yet still sound great while playing rock music, you know what I mean?

Anyways, if you ever want to know everything there is to know about car audio. Termpro is a good place to start. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

Ported vs Seales is like rotors vs pistons: the battle will never end. But never let someone who swears by sealed enclosures tell you ported boxes don't have excellent transient response...

ioTus 05-27-2004 02:09 AM

hm. interesting.

This vented box doesnt hit anywher NEAR as loud as the sealed box, yet the sealed box sounded nowhere NEAR as clear and true bassy as this vented one.

Sealed will sound bad if the Size is not correct for the sub. But Sealed is the easy one to get correct. I have heard some Very good Ported systems but they were all at the ISCAA finals.

Have you ever used the Termpro Sound Meters and SW? I own a part of a Shop and I am thinking about getting one to test cars with.

Yeah you are correct about the sealed box being easier to build.

Designing a ported box can sometimes cause headaches. Hehe.

I have never been metered because I don't want to spend the money on a metering device...

ioTus: It sounds (no pun intended) like the box may not be correctly designed for your subs. I'm not saying you made a mistake, but by all means the ported system should most definitely be louder.

jebenkurac 05-31-2004 11:26 AM

i put my infinity speakers in this morning, 6" in the rear and 4" in the front. they sound good, the only problem i had is that the speaker wells in the front were about a half inch too shallow. so they look like they are bulging out a little, but when i covered them back up with the stock speaker covers they look the same as before. next to go in is the amp and subs in the compartments.

ioTus 05-31-2004 11:47 AM

My 5.25" infinities fit up front just fine as far as depth. Well, they are up against the metal but they still barely fit. However, the 6x9's in the rear, there's no WAY those things would fit. I had to make like 3" riser plates to get them to clear the rear quarter panels.

Dysfnctnl85 05-31-2004 12:24 PM

If I do any audio mods, I definitely won't be putting speakers in the back...the front soundstage is all that matters.

ioTus 05-31-2004 01:28 PM

I disagree. Having the 6x9's in the rear REALLY creates a much more full overall sound stage, plus raises the soundstage level up closer to head level. The front speakers are down by your ankles, and shielded by the dash no less.

I can tell a huge difference messing with my gain levels on my amps for fr/rear balance.

Even tho my sub box blocks nearly all the sound coming from them... hehe.
