I just got an 84 rx-7 gsl-se. i wanna know what i should look for on the car to prevent any future problems. It also doesnt seem to pull very well in the top end, and it feels sluggish on the top in 2nd gear. just doesnt seem to be running right, what is usually the problem that cuases this? It sorta bogs in the top of 2nd.when you come to a stop, the idle also goes very low, down to like 200 and goes back up and back down.

the idle prob should be easily fixed. go to the links section and go to the fsm and in the fuel section it says how to adjust it.

ok umm when are the 5th and 6th port suspossed to open(what RPM). i dont think that mine are opening. the car just dont feel like it has the top end that it should. it acutally pulls harder on the low end. how do i make the ports open when there susposed to?

thats also in the fuel and emissions section of the fsm, page 50. it says how to check the 5 and 6 port actuators.



youll learn quickly that the fsm will be your best friend. dl the whole thing and youll be glad you did.

ok thanks i got the tps fixed so it idles good now. at what rpm is the fsm(think thats what your calling the 5th and 6th ports) susposed to open at? and do they open when your not moving? because when just reving it, not moving they dont open , and appear not to open when driving. and i did not see how to adjust them on the website, or do u just replace them?

No, the fsm is the Factory Service Manual (the link that I gave you). The ports are usually called 5th/6th ports or auxiliary ports. They should open at around 3800 rpm with a load on the car. There is no adjustment for them. Sometimes they will open while revving in neutral, but you have to rev it fast in order for it to work. One thing you can do is to push on the actuator rods. They should move smoothly. If they don't, they are probably built up with carbon. If this is the case, you will need to remove the intake, pull out the 5th/6th ports sleeves and clean them up and reinstall. The aux ports work off exhaust backpressure.



You will see a large tube that goes from the back of the intake to the main catalytic converter. There is a small tube (looks like a vacuum line) that connects to this and goes to the lower intake near the 5/6 port actuators. If the actuators move smooth by hand, check this tube to make sure that it is not clogged or cracked. I was experiencing low power on my SE too, and found that I had a hole in the line causing the ports not to work. Make sure that the larger hose (intake to main cat) is also connected.



You can also check the 5/6 port operation by covering the actuator rods with a thick grease (like wheel bearing grease) and then go for a hard drive. If the actuators are working, you will see the grease scraped off after your run.

I think I'm having a similar problem with my 85 SE. The car runs great, except it seems like it's not pulling as hard as it should. I suspect the auxillary ports aren't opening. My question is, since they operate off exhaust pressure, could clogged up catalytic converters cause a problem?
