More problems with my 1st gen

Hey guys,



I thought I had my overheat problem fixed...but it seems to have come back to haunt me...pretty much anytime I'm going under 40 my temperature decides to climb...really fast when I'm settin idling...we just replaced the 180 degree thermostat with a new one...I dont' have a clue what could be wrong



My dad seems to think it might be something with the "water pump"...mom thinks I need to get my radiator bored out...it has some kind of brownish goo that I can't get out...and rust

pretty nasty looking stuff...



Other than that my baby is running fine...just have to be careful how long I'm in town



If anyone could help I would appreciate it

Sounds like you need to fluch your radiator. Could be water pump, but I would fluch the radiator and go from there. Is the fan clutch working?? What I mean is the fan actually spinning at idle?



I would go to schucks and get a fluch kit for 5 bucks and start there.

Definately sounds like the radiator is clogged. Brown goo is a bad thing.

update...



I got my front brakes changed yesterday...no more nasty sounds from the front.

The problem with my radiator seems to stop if I pull over and turn my car off when it starts to overheat...only has to be off like a few secs and then started back up...then the guage quickly goes back to normal...not sure what that means

I'm getting the radiator "cored" or whatever it is that they do to em...hopefully that will put a end to my problems for a while

Hello and sorry to disagree with everyone,but I believe it's the fan clutch not the rad.If it was the rad it would overheat at all speeds,not just below 40.when your speeds are low or at idle ,your clutch on the cooling fan MUST kick in.

Hey all.You've got a point with the fan clutch there, rotarybhp but as a mechanic a still recommend a flush out. That goo isn't any good in any engine let alone the old rotors. Just remember at speeds below 40 the natural air flow from moving along can be insufficent for cooling, hence the clutch fan. A simple check is to spin by hand.It's also a good idea to do this while the engine is off! It should spin with some resistance. The unit itself is filled with a fine oil which heats and cools with the temperature of the water pump so as it heats up the oil expands and 'locks up' the fan. That's that screaming from the engine bay! Just watch though, as some of those units are not cheap!!

Just remember to change and clean the cooling system regularly. Rotors are easily damaged from poor service.
