I want to fabricate my own dash. My father suggests(strongly) Fibreglass, I would like to get a more "Racecar" look with sheet metal or, if I can afford it, aluminum.

My fathers argument is that the glass would be easier to work with(I disagree) and easier to fix if we mess something up. A point he didnt argue was weight. I'll caulk that one up myself.

Im thinking a metal dash so I'll never have to worry about it again. I think it will look better(in a rough kinda way) and be easier to work with when I start adding switches and gauges later. I hate that it will weigh so much but I am eventually going to strip the rest of the interior and replace it with something far lighter. Another argument for this is Im eventually going to attempt to fab a sheet metal bodykit and completely replace My fenders and Maybe most of the rear and I think this would make for good practice.

So I call for a vote

Fibreglass

or

Sheet Metal

And if anyone has any good links on either I would really appreciate them.

Wood. Thats the second time Ive heard that.

You dont think it would fall apart after a few rough months of driving? If it would work, I could build a much better wood dash than I ever could Glass or Metal.

Ive never heard of a wood dash(except for trim), especailly in a racing application.

actually i would prefer fibre glass, just because it is easy to work with light and pretty strong, you could make it like you made little paper machea puppets and stuff with like a wire base and then you could even make you own little dash pods and stuff it would be pretty simple.

fibreglass is a bitch, but i would recommend it over sheetmetal. I've seen a few sheetmetal dashes in rx-3's, moulded dashes look better.

Well, the car is eventually going "race ready" daily driver, Im stripping everything from the interior and adding Bars, so It doesnt really have to be consistent with the rest of the car but I dont want it to look too ratty either, I still have to go on dates in this car (yea right).

The main prob I have with fibreglass is I dont look forward to that day when Im at Home Depot or some place and some friend Im helping rams a peice of copper tubing or some **** through my dash board. In Other Words, I dont want Murphy to decide when my dash will get rebuilt. Id like to do it once and be done with it.
