It seems unlikely for any components behind the dash to go wrong, unless someones been shoving a screwdriver up there or something. I mean, its not to hard to get the instrument cluster out and have a look, but I'd say that your fuel sender unit is broked.

I'm sorry to ask this but just got a new 83 RX7 GLS; gas gauge doesn't work and I wondered if it might be a gas gauge sending unit problem but--and here's the question--I don't know where to look for the sending unit. I don't know much about this, so could someone point me in the right direction? thanks. (I'm just a silly girl.)

Remove the left rear tire. Behind it, toward the bumper, is a plastic cover. Remove that. Behind that is the fuel tank. There's a round plate with (two?) wires going into it and six mounting screws. That's the sending unit.

Now for the important part. I thought the sending unit was the reason for my gauge not working, but that wasn't the case. I was the actual gauge, so don't rule it out entirely.
