[quote name='Shane.Trammell' date='Jun 30 2005, 01:54 PM']no, the 12a motors are that way, the 13bs are all the same

pre-85 rotary engines , 10a,12a, and 13b mount with the bracket bolted to the front "timing cover", after 85 (2nd gen) motor mounts are bolted to the intermediate housing. one bolts up mid oil pan and the other on the opposite side with studs that stick out of the intermediate housing next to the engine water drain 14mm screw and is held with 17mm nuts. Pic below is engine out of my 80 13b first gen. White car is a 84 GSL-SE 13b fueld injected, notice how they both have the front mount bracket just like the 12a. Anybody have pics of a 2nd gen engine with mounts.

Hey thanks for the pics jgarza77 it helps out. Did you get your 3 core rad yet? I blew up the gsl-se motor so i found a built third gen motor i am gonna try to get in it using factory mounts for the third gen and am considering the 3rd gen trans too got any input on that

Shane.Trammell 06-30-2005 04:23 PM

hmm. i was under the impression that they were the same bc anytime someone wants to put a 13b into a 12a car they have to use a 12A front cover. if what you are saying is true, which m not really debating bc ive never really paid attention to it on my fb5, then a swap into a 12a car would be able to be done with the front cover from any fb engine

if memory serves me right, if you use a 12A turbo front cover and water pump it should ease your installation a bit, because the front cover will have the place to bolt the front motor mount bracket to your FB and it has the oil line to the turbo and so on, you are going turbo or are you going n/a?

Using the 12a front cover on a 2nd or 3rd gen into a 1st gen greatly reduces installation problems, trust me on that one. And if you use Racing Beats, front motor mount bracket it will keep you from bending welding and rigging your motor to fit. Also when using a 2nd or 3rd gen into a 1st gen the oil pan clearance needs to be looked into and the easiest way to solve that is to use the GSL-SE pan.

Aren't the S4/S5 TII trannies stronger anyways?

ALL the FB motors mount the same, that is, using the crossmember front cover thingy. Yes, thingy.

You not only need an FB (GSL-SE or any 1st gen model) oil pan, but the oil pickup as well.

FB MAZDATURBO 06-30-2005 04:38 PM

My only problem with running the first gen cover is the oil pan i would have to build one. I want to stay with the crank trigger setup on the 3rd gen motor i also got the complete harness so i will be running the aem pnp system to runn the motor with electric omp and everything just a single turbo conversion on the motor

had to read your post a couple of times, sorry.......got the 3 row it works great, I took a saw to the old one and it was trashed, sorry no pics. I have never done a 3rd gen engine and tranny swap using the stock mounts of the 3rd gen so not much input on that but if your present motor is a GSL-SE w/turbo, you should be able to use the front cover, mounts, and oil pan from your SE motor on the 3rd gen motor, not sure about intake bolt pattern though. What exactly are you planning to install? you going with the whole 3rd gen engine setup including twins?
