ok i would appreciate any help on this i have a 1985 maxda rx7 when i was installing the radio i did something that made it so that the tail lighgts, the dash back lights and the head light raiser doesent work the head lights still work i checked the fuses and one of them was blown , i replaced it and still nothing please send ideas to rangersbuddy@aol.com i also have an oil leak on the left side of the engine just under the oil filter any ideas i am trying to bring this old car back to life i bought it ia the paper for $650 i just got it running and am mfinding problemsthe fuel gauge doesent work eithe please help me

.....ouch...check the fusible links and check your bolts, a friends bolts on the engine, that hold everything together, could be turned by hand and was causing a leak. prolly could use a new sensor for the fuel gauge, ill get back to you on where it is located.

For a start I would recommend you go and get the original wiring diagram (download for free) from http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/1st_gen_manuals.htm You'll need the 84 one (nothing changed from 84 to 85), go the printable version if you've got the bandwidth.

With this you can find out where and how all the relays, wires are located and what the wire colours are to see if you've stripped or soldered the wrong wire in your stereo install. Good Luck is all I can say. :wiggle:

Make sure that your not grounding out from the chassis of the car too.If your headache raiser isn't working you might have jumped a current to the dash and fried the switch when you were installing the deck.Make sure to pull the raiser switch in the dash and check for any signs of a short.Always better to be safe then sorry.

thank you to everyone who responded i was playing arround with the car and i pulled the wireing harness out of the back of the radio and put in a new fusse and all worked fine then i plugged the radio back in and it blew the fuse

The fuel gauge is an easy fix. Either shell out the $100 for a new one or take the old one out, pick a spot on the top and grind all the rust off, solder a wire to that location and solder the other end to the right side of the connector piece with the prongs going down. A mod should contact me and I'll do a nicer Write-Up on how to do this. Thanks.

How many watts is the radio?

I don't think the wiring was designed to handle anything over 50 watts...I suspect the dual factory amps were actually quite a bit less than that...perhaps 30 combined



perhaps your radio pulls too many watts (or rather amps) for the current fuse to handle

You might have to re-wire to the fuse box

check the "rms" on the box or manual



Your alternator can only handle 300 watts max (55 to 60 amp)

also I think the radio might have a 15 amp fuse or something gay like that

which if I'm correct might only be able to handle about 75 rms watts of power



could try a larger fuse in its slot



I kept blowing one out on mine cuz I ripped out the old radio and put in a srs equalizer...used it to run audio to a 400 (200 rms) watt jensen tri-way amp that has its own battery cable hooked to a gm style battery...and no chance of problems...cuz its hooked to 4 guage cable with an 80 amp fuse https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Soon as I get some cash 2 8" kicker z's are going to join them...hence the name 3-way

I think I know what you did wrong. the original radio had 1 wire that only has power when you turn on the headlights. this is for the stock radio illumination. It sounds like you may have hooked up that wire to something wrong, or you cut the wires and that one is dangling and touching metal.

Sounds like some good thump you'll have when its done.Mine has a full out Eclipse Deck,Rockford Fosgate DB1000 and 2 12" alpine type R's in a sealed box.All with stock highs.I'll be replacing the front hear soon.When you crank the sub outs all you hear is bass in it.Thats what you get with 1100 watts tho. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png
