Default Drivetrain ID, and "back to life" procedure

So I'm new to the forum and to rotary engines. I've always been intrigued by them, but I never really had an opportunity to work with one. Yesterday, there was an 12a engine/transmission listed for free on CL so I hustled over there an picked it up. Figured, even if it was completely blown I could just dissect it for the learning experience and scrap it.

What I'm wondering if any of you rotary guys can tell me anything from looking at pictures, that wouldn't be obvious to someone new to these engines... it'd give me a bit of a jump start on my research.

Questions:

Stock looking set up... or weirdness
How do I ID that transmission?
Are there casting numbers on this Engine that would help me pin down the year.

It came out of an MGB GT conversion, and the owner was a hard core originality guy and was going back to the MGB 4 banger or bust... didn't care about this engine at all, and didn't know much about it. I am not such a purist and actually have a roller MGB that I could use this on ultimately if it seems worth messing with. The car had been in indoor storage for a very long time, so I also need to know what the proper resurrection procedure for these is... marvel in the plug holes and all that.

Thanks!

Yes, spins pretty good... Only tried by hand though so far.
