Hi again. I am completely carb illeterate, and am in need of some advice.

The story with my friends 84 GS is that it had been sitting up for three years. I cleaned the gas tank out the other day, which was freaking horrible. I doubt I could even measure the amount of **** that came out of that tank.

I put on a new fuel filter, and about 3 gallons worth of gas in the tank.

The car will start, and run if I pour gas in the carb, or spray brake cleaner in the carb, but it won't run on its own.

What should I do next? I figure the problem is either clogged lines, the need for more gas, or carb problems. What can I do to figure things out? I am really smart when it comes to cars, but I've had no experience with carbureators yet. Thanks.

your float bowls and fuel inlets are probobley all clogged up. pull it apart and soak it in parts cleaner, and scrub the **** out of it all...

then if you get it running run a tank of supreme fuel through it and a good fuel system cleaner.

good luck

how about the fuel pump? I'd probably buy a kit a rebuild that carb too...

I forgot to put in the original post that the fuel pump could also be suspect.

How hard is it to take off/apart the carb?

I'd first try just pulling the top of the carb off and cleaning out the float bowls, and the needles and seats. There are also some little strainer looking deals where the fuel lines go into the carb, they could be clogged with ****.

Cool, I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

you said you put a new filter on. was it the one under the hood or the one by the tank. if the tank was that bad id say that both need changing, and yeah check both needles under the floats.

I had this probelm when I first got my 7 ...the floats were sticking so instead of wasting my time with a stock carb...

i got a RB intake..Holley 600 double pumper.....Holley Blue fuel pump...and that was the end of that problem..

and I still can use them parts on my next upgrade...
