Unhappy

intheburgh here, any comments on using Slick 50 in an '82' RX-7 with a stock 12A, 140k miles on it.

will it cause any problems because with the oil going into the combustion chambers?

also I'm thinking about doing the ATF thing before i do a tune-up, does it really help a high mileage engine?

Thanks for any help!

NO!

Slick 50 has little affect on piston engines and due to the fact that the rotary engine uses oil injection to cool the rotors it could only be mucho worse.

Nasty stuff, wish I still had some links on it.

I dont know exactly about the slick 50, but im assuming it would be in the same train of thought as using synthetic oils.

as far as the atf, yes you should do it. with that many miles youre bound to have some carbon build up. remember that the longer you let it sit the more it will dissolve the carbon.

Oil additives are mostly useless to any engine in my opinion. This theory was backed up by Every professor in my auto engineering major in college. The only thing better then regular engine oil that is API certified, is sinethic oil...which shouldn't be used in rotaries because it is not as good for being burned in the combustion chamber of the rotary.

The best thing you can possibly do is get a known brand oil and use it in your rotary and change oil at normal intervals 1500-3000miles depending on driving conditions. 10W-30 in cold temps below 30F and 20W-50 above 30F is my guide.

Hey all, I couldn't agree more with rohlr on these so called tune ups in a bottle. As a mechanic for too many years, Ive seen various additives which claim the world but in reality are basically crap. I won't mention names, but a customer of mine was importing and selling a oil additve with did all the usual wonderful things and in the time he began to use it in his transmission he actually destroyed[and I mean destroyed!] 3 gearboxes! Finally he decided that it may be his additives and they found the stuff was actually floating on top of the oil causing the oil not to thrown onto the gears/bearings and well you know the rest.

He went back to a good quality oil and has not touched it since. I'd just stick with regular oil changes using good mineral based oil.

On my site we all the racers pretch Castrol 20/50 because the oil is good enough, and it burns clean.. A lot of "Slick 50" stuff is bad for a rotary.. It does not burn well at all, and can clog your oil passages due to the rotary running hotter then a standard piston engine. If you run a closed loop system, then run Redline 20/50, and add your pre mix, but other then that stay with Castrol 20/50 GTX.

Cheers

Mike
