im thinking gsl-se

is there any other model that came disc brake and posi ?

about the splines are they all the same

Buzzbomb 05-28-2006 12:21 PM

My 82 has disc brake and posi. Not sure about tthe posi/LSD years. Rear dscs started in 81, and were offered through 85, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not certain which model mine is, GSL I believe, from the options on the car.,,,,BB

AFAIK, all '84-85s had the same axle size and splines. Your difference will be the bolt pattern. GSLs had LSD and disc brakes, but came with the 4x110 bolt pattern. GSL-SEs had LSD and discs, but were the only first gen RX-7s with 4x114.3 bolt pattern. The easy way to tell them apart: GSL-SEs have lug nuts, GSLs have lug bolts. I don't think you can get a new axle for a reasonable price from anywhere, however, used axles are easy to find.

If this is a regular occurance for you, consider upgrading to a modded 8.8" out of a Mustang. You'll have to relocate the mounting brackets, and you'll probably want some c-clip eliminators.

j9fd3s 05-30-2006 10:02 AM

someone makes axles for those, some domestic company, i forget

Buzzbomb 05-30-2006 12:30 PM

I can vouch for the 8.8's toughness. I have a few performance mods on my 98 F150 4.6, so it's about 260HP at the flywheel. I have had no problems whatsoever.,,,,HD

A little pricey, but if you keep breaking axles like this it may be a viable option...

z-beater 06-01-2006 10:09 AM

Well the axles are the weak link of the system, that is for sure. I really hate putting that heavy 8.8" in there.

I have heard quite a few conflicting comments on what the stock rear can take. Some people say that 350rwhp is the limit others say 500. Some people say the break them on a car that runs low 14's other say that it will carry you into the 10's.

All I know is that I have seen people with v8 swaps putting out over 400rwhp and launching on slicks at 2800RPM. I know that this does not really compare to a 6k drop. But I also keep thinking over and over that at the same hp the V8 produces boat loads more torque. And since that is what breaks rear-end components I try and focus on that.

Does anyone know what material the Stock axles are made of. Are there any HD aftermarket options?

Thanks

Z

There is a company that sells a full-floating conversion kit, but I don't remember who. I do know that it's expensive as hell.

z-beater 06-02-2006 02:14 PM

HAHAHA, yeah "expensive as hell" does not really work with me https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Call around and find a powertrain company, we have one in my town that will fabricate axles for anything.

Here is a reply on 4 seperate PM's with DriftAtlanta on Aftermarket LSD and axles. Hope it helps.

I have a 85 gsl housing w/ se brakes, moser axles, 1.8l miata kaaz, (it takes the large axles). Aluminum Drive shaft w/ 800hp ujoints from drive shaft specialties in texas. Any more questions just holla

Adam

I dont know the year, but i have the manual for the kaaz in my tool box. I called newport exotic cars, just said i needed a diff for a 1.8l miata.

The moser axles are the same as gsl-se as far how the bolt in, stock bearings, bolt pattern. I had them made little longer than stock length. I had to try about 11mm of each and have 12mm between each axles when you have the diff out.

I only have 200whp at this time, hopfully i will go up another 30hp when i redo the exhaust and up the boost

Adam

Dont know the part number. I called Newport exotic cars, talked to the guy. All i knew was 1.8L miata diff fit. So i bought the 1.5. Its not torsen its clutch type. If you call the guy he set you up w/ the correct diff. If you can wait till monday . I will look in my tool box at work, and see if the part number is one the manual.

I would also suggest the moser axles, I have bent probably 4 sets of stock ones. The moser are only 350 shipped. I have a invoice number you have them copy the order. All you need to have them do is make them 12mm shorter my order. I went longer so i could custom tailer the length w/ the diff out to get as much spline in the kaaz.

Adam

KAAZ LSD part number on manual

Slammed very good information there...I am going to try and keep the stock rear-end while producing 400rwhp. Think I can do it?

Slip the clutch on launches and stay away from super sticky compounds and anythings possible.

Dysfnctnl85 06-11-2006 09:45 AM

If you need a set of stock axles I have two sets: 1 GS and 1 GSL-SE.

I'm going local and seeing who can make some strong axlex with 5 lug "hats" on them.
