I will be posting all my updates and current goings on with this car in here. Engine has unrebuilt 166,000 miles on it. All the spark plug wires were reversed when I bought the car. Easy fix. I just recently, as of yesterday, installed my new RB performance non-port exhaust. http://i26.tinypic.com/2d6ttvn.jpg http://i29.tinypic.com/2rhpedl.jpg Before I installed this, I had crap long headers that "almost" fit onto a flextube, then to a off brand muffler. Now my car will get sideways around a turn.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683473.gif next I will be upgrading all the bushings to polyurethane. Then I will move on to rear lower control arms, weather striping, window motors, headlight assemblies; I want a good base before I start the upgrades. I have KONI adjustable race suspension in the garage so I will likely be installing that coupled with RB springs and sway bars. I will start building an enlarged street ported 12A with matching exhaust ports next weekend, my nephews are down from VA this weekend. I'll post more updates soon. What's a good performance electric fan for this car? I don't want to do much fabrication as I'm looking for easy installs, but I will if needed. I heard a dual fan from the Toyota MR2 works very well. |
beautiful car man! wish mine still looked that good haha

Efan question:
I'm using a set of twin fans from a 1st Gen MR2. They go in very easily and work/look great. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif |

Here's a picture. There is a "hook" or lip of metal on the top of the fan housing, which sits nicely in the little gutter that runs along the top of the radiator. Then, just drill two holes (one on each side) in the fan housing to match up with two of the mounting points for the original fan shroud. Use the original bolts to attach, and that's all there is to mounting it. You can see one of the bolts in the picture. Then I went to Autozone and picked up an adjustable fan controller for $17.00 to run the system, and that has worked out very nicely. They had it behind the counter, not out on the shelf, so you have to ask for it. The fan blades and motors can be removed from the housing if you want to clean/paint it before installation. I soaked mine in Muriatic Acid mixed 50% with water for about an hour, and it came out bare metal ready for primer and paint. You can pick the acid up for a few bucks/gallon at any hardware store, and it's a real time-saver. Good luck, hopefully this information will help. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif |
thanks for the info Kentetsu. it will help me out later on in this build.
i just picked up a parts car today for $400. it has the 4:10 rear end in it among many other things that i will be gutting. a pic of her best side. http://i30.tinypic.com/smero1.jpg |
eesh. drop a 20b in with a ford 9" in the rear and make her a drag car.
|
i like your thinking:drive:
|
well i got the a/c installed for the most part. need to get some hoses to finish. i also put on my panasport rims with toyo proxy 4s 205/55/15 and she hugs the road now. im fighting victoria british over a wrong rear window louver. i also started cross drilling brake rotors today as well. my brake pads are low so i will probably upgrade to hawk hps.
|
wait, you're drilling your rotors yourself? do you have a cnc drill press or are you doing it by hand?

i got a drill press. heres what they look like w/ template and finished. http://i36.tinypic.com/29v0y0.jpg http://i35.tinypic.com/11jucdd.jpg |
ah, you didn't mention you have a template lol got worried for a second. looks nice man!
|
well im finishing the ac today and charging it at work tomorrow, yay. i will be installing rear rotors and pads this weekend. ive also discovered a carb issue that i will need to address this weekend as well. wish i had the money for webers right now, but i guess that can wait until i swap engines, which i will be porting intake and exhaust myself as well.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif
if my polyurethane bushings get here this week i will also be changing out the left rear lower control arm as well as installing the bushing. so many things to do, not enough time or money.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif |
lol that point is hit with any project. my fd has an incredible parts list but now i don't have the money for the final tune

i know what you mean. im 5k deep (estimated) and still looking to drop another 10k into the car, not including paint. i feel the end result will be well worth it though and the look on the v8 guys faces is priceless, especially when the ask what size motor i got.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.gif im about to drop another $700 next week on pwr window regulators.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif not what i really want to do, but i flipped a coin and thats how it went. bushings and brake rotors are now installed. i also used the RR lower control arm and rear sway bar as both on mine were bent, but i will upgrade to respeeds sway bars when i do my suspension upgrades.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683473.gif |
well. its been awhile since i posted progress, but there hasnt been much. i just recently upgraded my headlights to halogens, pot holes are a plenty in SW FLA. i also changed my fuel filter, which did not fix my bogging down problem, but it was cheap and needed to be done. i also have a weber 45 dcoe coming and in a couple of weeks i will have the upper and lower manifolds coming. i started putting away money for all my engine seals for my enlarged street intake & exhaust ported engine.
|
Nice man, glad it's moving along for you. I can't believe the regulators are 700! The lr control arm is bent on my fd from a previous owner jacking it by that. Ugh I hate being broke lol

lol. who in their right mind would lift from the center of a control arm, but my cars exhaust was bolted to the undercarriage so i guess theres stupid everywhere. yeah after the carb its on to christmas shopping , so i probably wont be doing much for a while either. but at least i have stuff to keep me busy. |
Lol yeah, you can't fix stupid, and it's everywhere
|

im also in that area, cape coral. so if you know of any mazda clubs or anything like that in the area let me know. I have a 300 zx for a daily driving and the mazda its my toy, I live i cape too by the walmart on del prado |
well i changed out my tranny and diff. fluids. found some brass flakes in the tranny fluid. i believe its from second gear. i used redline shockproof light for both tranny and diff., but added some friction modifier to the diff. i also have the 4.88 rear end gears coming and it will be here next week, so im preping a pig for it. im going to check my other tranny and see what kind of condition its in and may do a swap with that as well.
slowly but surely this is turning into faster car.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif |
i got my 4.88 in a casing and took all the largest clutch plates and put them into the LSD for more bite. i will do the install next weekend. 1st and 2nd gears are going to be none existent, but 3rd and 4th is where it is really going to shine.
|
well, i got the 4.88 in and it runs like a dream!!! pulled the vette out of the garage and replaced it with the parts car so i can properly tear it down till nothings left. got laid off, so all funded projects are on hold till further notice.
|
Bummer deal man :/ glad you got the project drivable before hand
|
yeah it sucks, but no sense in thinking too long or hard about it. sign of the times, know what i mean.
anyways got a lot done this week with very few problems with old bolts and screws breaking or stripping. http://i54.tinypic.com/5v7wqb.jpg http://i55.tinypic.com/neuhwi.jpg |
Dang you weren't joking about stripping her down

http://i55.tinypic.com/29lgrjd.jpg started chopping the car this weekend. i already hear hearts breaking, but rest assured the car was TOTALED on the passenger side, some parts were even pushed in 8in. everything that i can salvage i am and will be selling parts sometime down the road. the rest of today i am pulling the rest of the front suspension, engine, and exhaust. |
Best of luck man! How hard did it get hit? And how are you going to get the body lined back up?

it got hit on the right rear, hard enough to ruin the axle on that side and bent the housing a little. im glad i wasnt there to see it. that would have been painful to watch. the car is not salvageable, you would need to cut the rear and weld a new one in, far too much for what the car is worth im afraid. so, this is chop shop 101. im selling scrap metal to help with bills anyway. i picked the car up for $400 and i've taken about $2000 in parts out and i should make $200 on scrap so, whatever to keep bills paid, until i can find a job. |
Better that it's being parted out than crushed in "cash for clunkers"
******* government :( |
i havent posted progress in a while, because there was none. my new job and community service has been taking all my time. anyways i tore apart the parts car engine and well the guy said it ran, but im a bit skeptical on that one. the engine is done. its has chatter and scorch marks something fierce on both rotor housings, so if it did run, it couldnt have been well. so theres not much i can use engine wise. i took pics, but they dont really show the damage. my carb is starting to go and my pulleys are done. ive gone through two belts so far. next week im ordering a set of aluminum dual belt pulleys just in case.
|
Check to make sure the alternator is down tight. If the mounting bolts aren't tight enough it'll be out of alignment and throw belts. Same for a worn out harmonic balancer. If it wobbles while running, it'll eat belts and need replaced. I'm now unemployed so all my tools are home now, but I don't have a garage lol
|
being unemployed is nice for a very brief period of time, then it gets old. no garage? now thats just torture. i dont know what id do with my free time then. thanks for the tips man ill check that stuff out this weekend and post more pics of the demo on the parts car. hell i may even get the window regulator from mazdatrix since its cheap, new, and almost gone.
|
sorry for delay of posts but my pc died and just got a new/used one. but on to what i have done to the ride since then.
i put new wheel bearings in the rear, but still need to install fronts. i got some polyurethane motor mounts from banzai-racing and a mazdacomp factory race trans mount. i installed all new feul lines. i got a new pump and regulator, but still need to install. my second motor is now ported, but still needs seals. i took the carb off the racecar and slapped that beast on, pic below, and am now premixing oil with my gas 1:2 ratio for now. i would also like to install an electric a/c compressor, so any ideas on how to or what to get would be appreciated. i know denso has a very light and compact one, but not sure if it will work on this system. http://i52.tinypic.com/okrdvs.jpg i have a few reliability issues im going to address before i move back to my suspension upgrades. |
so i was bored yesterday and started going crazy. cut some weight from my spare front end housing, pic below. this is just one of the things i will be doing to lighten an already light car. the front lower control arms and cross members will be getting a full weld insted of the spot weld and holes will be put in them both. i will be grinding down part of the lip on the front lower control arms as well to make accessing some bolts easier.
http://i43.tinypic.com/jj2y4x.jpg personally i think this just looks bad ass. tell me what you think. |
im ordering some camber adjust plates from ground control in the next couple of days. i aligned my car and the camber is out. i will also be putting 3 degrees on the caster, caster is faster. when i install the plates i will post pics but heres the page.
i will also be installing coil overs, some unused shocks for the rx3 race car. http://www.ground-control-store.com/...p/II=697/CA=87 |
