Default 84 Mazda Rx-7 wont run

I recently bought my Rx-7. it has a 12a engine in it and a nikki carb. i rebuilt the carb and tried to set my floats and i got the car to idle only when holding the gas pedal. the car then died after awhile and starting pouring gas into the carb. what do i do?

Sounds like the float isn't cutting off the fuel when the bowl is full. Is the float valve seat present and in good shape? Was your rebuild kit the exact right one for the carb? You might need to seek out an expert on that particular carb.

There was usually a return line back to the tank from the carb. The actual fuel pressure used was nearly nothing.
So a rather laim fuel pump could be used. The needles in the needle and seat set were rubber tipped. Be sure the tips are still in place. You may notice that the needle is a three part deal. A shell, a stem, and a spring. Discard the spring. Replace the spring with a length of plastic tubing from the center of a Bic pen. This makes the needle rigid.
This then will control the fuel supply well up the pressure range. This was an IMSA racing mod from many years ago. Some folks removed or plugged that return line and installed a real fuel pump. Without this needle mod there is no chance of not flooding the engine. Also check that the floats are set low enough so as not to touch the bowl cover. Lynn E. Hanover
