RE_TurboFB 12-22-2007 12:49 AM

Whats up,

I want to put some wide tires on my first gen. The only way im going to pull that off is if I get some fender flares..

I cant find any cool ones for a good price.

So I am trying to make a set for my car, and I want to know what you guys think so far.. Keep in mind that they are a crude work in progress..

[attachment=43504:Picture_027.jpg]

[attachment=43505:Picture_032.jpg]

Do any of you guys know where to get a cool set of flares???

j9fd3s 12-23-2007 11:27 AM

those look pretty good.

if you're looking for flares, mariah motorsports has em, and so does mazda competition, isc racing....

RE_TurboFB 12-23-2007 04:47 PM

Would you happen to have the web address for mazda competition or isc racing....

Or anyway of getting ahold of them??

Racer X 12-24-2007 07:02 PM

That front looks dope man.Loving the vents

RE_TurboFB 12-24-2007 10:16 PM

Most people in my town think there stupid looking but once i get them right I think it might look cool... If not I'm considering trying to make a full wide body kit....

sen2two 12-25-2007 08:23 PM

i love the entire front end. especially the front bumper.

did you make that too? do you have the stock large brace underneath, or is that entirely gone?

RE_TurboFB 12-25-2007 11:15 PM

A friend of mine wrecked his Honda that had this front air dam on it...

It was broken up pretty good I got it for $20, and used it as a base for the one I have now. It took alot of spray foam and fiberglass, but most of all trying to learn how to do it right https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.gif !!!

I cut Out the stock aluminum front bumper and welded in a tube frame front bumper to make it fit right..

z-beater 12-27-2007 08:42 PM

Car is looking good. I had not seen you post in a while so I thought you abandoned the project. I thought that I would also add that you can use cabriolet flares or with a little modification you can use 240z flares.

RE_TurboFB 12-28-2007 01:57 AM

This might be a dumb one...but ???? Can I use stock? 240Z flares or do I use some aftermarket 240Z flares. If so do you know where I could get a set???

Thanks!

Yup, those are the ones. I have yet to see a set that has been fitted in the US. But there have been a few people that have purchased then with intentions to install. Initial fitment seemed pretty good. A lot better than I expected.

RE_TurboFB 12-29-2007 02:50 AM

Whoa!! I like those Z fenders alot!! I need to get a set of those and modifiy them a bit to my likeing... thats just what I was looking for!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif

Thanks again guys!!

you have pictures of this before it was finished? i wanna try this out.

RE_TurboFB 12-30-2007 09:51 PM

I have a picture of the air damn pieced together before I started to majorly modifiy it to fit my car.. It is packed away some where.. I need to remember where it's at.. I'll check to see if it might be on a old floppy disc..

sen2two 12-31-2007 11:34 AM

thanks man....would love to see it.

legokcen 01-01-2008 06:06 PM

I'm going to have to get a front air dam for the 7 as well. I'd love to widen it a little. With the 225 hoosiers, they stick out to a point where it almost looks like roller skating tires.

RE_TurboFB 01-01-2008 06:59 PM

OH man this is retarded!! I dug through a bunch of junk. I think I found the disks with my bodywork pis on them but my new laptop doesnt have a floppydrive..

Do you guys know what tire size a FD runs???

I think they run 255/16 but I dont know for sure.....

I would like to modify my fenders and suspension so that I could run somthing around that size...

225/16 is correct. and there only 15lbs!

or 15. something, depending on if they were early 93 or later. they were made stronger wich added a little weight. nothing major though.

i have them on my FC. (i have two sets, gun metal and polished)

RE_TurboFB 01-02-2008 10:24 AM

Well I still cant find all my bodywork pictures so I'll try to show you how I did it with my fender flairs...

1. first lay a bunch of spray foam...

[attachment=43607:Picture_036.jpg]

2. Then you file and sand, to shape the foam as you want...

3. cover the foam with duct tape

[attachment=43608:Picture_069.jpg]

4. Then lay the fiberglass!!

[attachment=43609:Picture_078.jpg]

I did the same thing to modify the air damn to fit my FB https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif

sen2two 01-02-2008 11:40 AM

very nice work!

did you put down a layer of bondo or anything like that to get a smooth finish? how many layers of fiberglass did you use to make it strong enough?

sen2two 01-03-2008 09:17 AM

oh...and wich spray foam did you use?

RE_TurboFB 01-03-2008 07:56 PM

I wanted the flares to be ridged but still light. So I used 2 layers of fiberglass matt and brushed one a thin layer of resin.

They are vary light, and vary ridgid. I didnt throw them on a scale. If i was to guess I would say that they can't weigh over 3 LBS. each

To help get the smooth finish on the fiberglass I used wax paper on top of the resin, and smothed all the air bubbles out with a plastic spreader. The last picture is of just fiberglass, But I did add a thin layer of bodyfiller the flarirs to find the low spots. I ended up sanding at least %80 of the bodyfiller.

I used some "big gap filler" spray foam from homedepot. I don't know if its the best to use though.

Oh ya.. if you rip the pieces of fiberglass up by hand instead of cutting them it seems to be stronger...

sen2two 01-03-2008 09:18 PM

i started making, or modifying my FC front bumper to fit my front mount. hopefully mine goes well. i'll try to get some pics up when im finished.

RE_TurboFB 01-07-2008 12:32 AM

You started to modify a stock FC bumper to fit a FB???

I saw a guy here on nopistons that fit a stock FC front bumper and fenders on a FB...

z-beater 01-07-2008 12:45 AM

You have pictures of that RE? I would like to see that...

no...i placed my front mount low on my FC for better air flow to the radiator and pretty much had to hack the stock FC bumper in half to fit it. so i was wanting to make the lower half of the bumper.

didnt turn out to well. i didnt use spray foam cause that **** was $6 a can!!! damn! and i accidently got resin "jelly". the kind used for boats. that pissed me off. i tryed useing it anyways and it didnt turn out so great. its like spreading a mud pie. soooo heavy.

i think i'll do it again, the right way.

exspensive ass spray foam and the CORRECT resin here i come. i think i might just try and make the whole front end instead of trying to mate the fiberglass to the stock bumper. its urethane right?

and i would loooove to see stock FC fenders and front end on a FB/SA!!!!!

RE_TurboFB 01-08-2008 04:12 PM

The "big gap" spray foam expands sothing like 10X it size... But it has some big pours in it when it cures...

One can of the "big gap" stuff is enough to do one of my flares and I cut quite a bit off..

I need to give the original spray foam a **** to see how well it expands and how pourus it is when cured..

Yeah the normal fiiberglass resin Is really thin and can be brushed on with a paint brush..

I'm going to bring some of my floppy discs to the library tomorrow, and see if they will let me load some pictures off them...

sen2two 01-10-2008 04:37 PM

oh...i thought i would need something like 10 cans. i woulda only needed 3 probley.

would love to see how you did the bumper too...hopefully you can load them up there.

RE_TurboFB 01-26-2008 01:13 PM

Well..better late then never I dug through a bunch of crap and found one air dam picture...

[attachment=43800:MY_air_dam.JPG]

This is a picture of it right after I got it peiced together good enough to try and fit it on my car.....

Clarks7 01-28-2008 06:41 PM

I was using a similar method to build a custom FC hood that fit my 20b... still working on it...

Looks great, it is inspiring to see someone build something custom and make it work!

RE_TurboFB 01-29-2008 02:04 PM

This summer I think I'm going to make a mold for my air dam, And see if anyone wants one.. I dont think many will be interested because you have to make a custom front bumper, and you also have to cut the fenders..

It's either that or I'm going to make a widebody kit for it. That way it will be a "bolt on" application, I want to make something that looks like a widebody kit they put on the FD JGTC (RE Amamiya) race car. But thats a lot of work....

sen2two 01-29-2008 08:42 PM

i was thinking about making a one piece fiberglass front end.

could i just completely cover the front end, including fenders, hood, and bumper, with fiberglass mats?

but what i dont know is how would i bolt it down?

zeroecco 01-29-2008 11:31 PM

Two main pins in the firewall where the hood over laps with the body . the part where the hood latch is.

RE_TurboFB 01-31-2008 01:33 AM

I considered trying to make a 1 or even a 2-piece Front end... I love the seemless look!!!! Nice and smooth no nasty seem all the way around the hood or between the front air dam and the fenders...

The coolest part about the 1-piece front end is (IMO) the aerodynamics!!! Then add some flush headlights!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif

you could duct tape the fenders, front air dam and the hood by them selfs. Then make each one out of fiberglass. Just brush some resin one the duct taped surface the lay a couple layers of fiberglass mat. Then Brush on another layer of resin on top of the mat. while the resin is curing you can lay wax paper over the resin and sqweegie out all the air bubbles and stuff. Let them cure for about 20 MIN the peel off the wax paper..

You should have a pretty smooth surface that requires minimal amount of sanding and body filler..

The pros use a "gel coat" on theres to finish it up. I wonder what this gel coat is, How it is applied, And where I can get hold of it...?????

sen2two 01-31-2008 08:28 AM

why not just do the whole front at once? why the fenders seperate?

where can i get the wax paper?

th flush look is sick! plus the weight loss too!

Clarks7 01-31-2008 04:25 PM

The hard part with that is making such a large survice smooth. It is easy to lay out the fiberglass keeping it light... but eventually if you want to spray it...

If you have a straight front end. I would suggest making a large mold. lay the wax paper over the entire front end than lay the glassand or foam. Than make the front end.

All you would have to do is worry about simming it up to the frame (you could bolt it anywhere.

This might have already been what you had in mind, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway.

RE_TurboFB 01-31-2008 09:56 PM

"The hard part with that is making such a large surface smooth" He is SO right!!!!

If I ever try to make a copy of mine I'm going to try and make a mold kinda like the one you were talking about...

I need to put something on my front end that will make it "NON-stick", But still be smooth. That way I can lay fiberglass or spray foam on it to make a good clean mold..https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

I need to sneak a peak on how the pros do it..!!!

RE_TurboFB 01-31-2008 10:03 PM

OH..Yeah... You can get big 2 foot by 4 foot pieces of silicon treated "pan liners" through Food service suppliers.. Like cash & carry. Some fast food places use them, But they work pretty good. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

Clarks7 02-01-2008 03:29 PM

Another "unprofessional" idea for making the mold is to use casting material. it is easier to get the bubbles out than fiberglass mesh.

sen2two 02-01-2008 04:08 PM

i used turle wax before to be able to lift the fiberglass.

also pam works great.
