Unhappy

i 've got a 1981 rx7 with all engine's stuff stock. i 've recently discovered that since i got the car the secondaries of the carb. never worked.i was living in a slow-driving world full of dissapointment.

now i get it fixed but i want something more.

a friend of mine gave me a performance muffler(unknown brand) and i'm thinking to fit it ,remove the pre-silencer and use a straight tube from the header.is it better to keep the stock tube size or try something bigger.

may i have any improvement at sound and performance?

what if i also remove the stock filter-box and filter and fit an aftermarket(k&n or something).what would be the horsepower?any help and suggestions will help.

well if your gonna do the exhaust do the header also it gonna make a big difference. also the filter might not do much but doing the filter and the ignition and removing the clutch fan will give a significant difference. then there's always putting in a new carb and porting but i would do the basics first

ohh and as far as noise lets just say your neighbors aint gonna like you as much anymore

Ok i have done this very thing with my 83 rx. I did the racing beat header first and then ran a straight pipe all the way back to a performance muffler. It was very very loud. So i put a cat back in and it is still loud. I like it but the people you live around won't. I also put the weber intake system on mine with the weber side draft carb. it made a pretty big difference. I also threw in a short throw shifter.... and I love it. I am going turbo next so i basically waisted my money on a header but i will enjoy it until then. Best of luck.

You don't want to run a straight pipe, way to loud to most ears. Otherwise a header, prescilencer and performance kit of choice works well.

The factory filter is way to choked, I belive Racing Beat makes a drop in replacement that allows it to breath through all the filter and not just the snorkle. That or ditch the whole mess and do a cone filter.

Some guys like to cut the spring for the secondaries so they open faster, I didn't have much of a difference when I tried it.

If you've got the money Paul Yaw does one heck of a conversion on the stock carb and it gives mucho more horsepower and MUCH better throttle response.

If you ditch you air pump, ditch your cats or theyll just plug up.

That's the basics anyways

hey Burnem if your gonna go turbo let me know cuz i can get the stuff you need cheap( turbo, mani, carb mod etc) also if you need the motor pinned i can get it done for 500-600 $

by the way i got a 62-1 garret turbo, turbo manifold, and 23x20x2.5 intercooler for 1200 $ so im just waiting to pull my motor so we can pin it and then it will be ready for boost.

From experience, the "performance" muffler will be way way way way way too loud with headers and a straight pipe.... You need a maximum flow muffler that quiets the sound, not amplifies it like many universal performance mufflers do... I have headers with hollowed out cat and the universal muffler I had was "dumb loud"... The neighbors DID call the police several times and I DID get a loud muffler ticket once (i bet if it was a civic i wouldn't have gotten the ticket)... Look into a performance muffler that actually muffles the sound and then your noise (a pleasant rotating sound) will come from your engine,,, not from your muffler... I have a primaflow muffler in my car right now and it holds back the noise remarkably,, but you still hear me coming.... :flush:

well this is the point were you ask yourself this question " do i sacrifice noise and tickets for all out performance?" my answer is yes let the po po give me all the tickets they want and let the neighbors bitch i want all the power i can extract from my car
