Is this at idle?Is the engine warmed up?I just did my leading timing on my 83 and at idle its fairly straight forward to set the timing.

Maybe the wire clamp is getting a signal from an adjacent plug wire? Mine does that (cheapo timing light).

Mine Did the same thing! I have a $120.00 Timming Light.

Instead of hooking it up towards the Spark Plugs.

Hook it up to the wires comming out of the Disti instead.

Works everytime unless your wires are worn out as stated above.

Could also be CrossTriggering? But I doupt it.

jumping timing marker is a good sighn of miss fire. give it a good tune up

wires, plugs , the works. most of the time trail plugs are rock solid not much jumping. Leads can be a little jumpy just depends of mileage and carb set up.

but if everything is stock leads don't have to bet absolute perfect. also remember to follow the manual set up about water temp wiring durning timing.
