Thumbs up

I've got a 74 repu with a fuel injected 13b from an 87 rx7. The other day I lost 5th gear. It goes in but pops out when the clutch is released. I pulled the tailcone off yesterday and found that the rear main bearing had been pushed back about an inch. I put everything back in place and reassembeled the transmission; it lasted about 2 seconds and pushed the bearing right back. I'm suspecting 5th gear is worn. Since this is my only transpo, and I live in the hills, I can't be without it more than a day or two. So, I want to find a replacement trans to put in while I rebuild this one.

I've been reading some posts and it looks like the original trans should be a 4 speed. I noticed while working on it that the crossmember has been modified; moved back about 1 or 2 inches. I'd like to find another one of these tranys but need to know what I'm looking for.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

If the crossmember has been moved back then its probably a 2nd gen tranny. You can probably find one pretty cheap on ebay.

A second gen repu tranny? It's a 5 speed.

Do you know the model number for it? Is there a website that'll show me some pics so I can make some comparisons?

Thanks

After looking at some 2nd gen rx7 transmissions, I'm sure that's not it. This shift housing on the 2nd gen is further back than on mine. another difference is that mine doesnt have the shift shaft, shifter goes straight into the transmission just forward of the end of the output shaft. Also the neutral/reverse switch(not sure which it is yet) is positioned on the rear housing pointing to the front. I also noticed while I had it apart that there is no plate bolted on over the rear main and countershaft bearings, just snaprings holding those suckers in.

Would a 2nd gen rx7 tranny bolt up, without too much modification?

That sounds more like a 1st gen 78-80 trannsmission, I would know for sure without a pic but by your description I would assume it is. If the front bellhousing is removable its going to be something older like an rx2,3,or 4 but if the bell housing doesnt come off and its smooth along with your description I would assume early 1st gen rx7. Hit the wrecking yards and compare, or post some pics and someone here may be able to identify it for you.

Sweet, thanks, that looks like the one.

By 1st gen, you say 78-80; I always thought 1st gen would be 78-85 or so. I know they change the taillights after 80, but was there a change to the transmission? I'm just trying to figure out how wide of a range in years I can look for. I'll start with 78-80 though.

Thanks again.

1st gen is 78-85, but the tranns change through out, if I remember correctly 78-80 is one 81-83 started the remote shifter, and 84-85 look the same as 81-83 but the remote shifter is about 2 inches longer.

Make sure you check the trannsmission you are pulling to make sure its a five speed cuz the 78-80 came 4spd and 5spd and at times you will think its a 4 but its a broken 5spd....just a heads up

Ah, the remote shifter with the shift tube; that explains it.

Thanks again
