[attachment=45479:1974_RX4_Wagon_1.jpg]Hi there,

Not sure if in the right forum but help is greatly appreciated. I have an all original 1974 RX4 Wagon (body in excellent condition, picture attached) with a carburated B13 engine.

1) The engine idle is rough and engine dies if I don't step on the gas pedal;

2) Also, blows a lot of smoke when engine starts.

Am considering replacing the original engine with a more reliable carburated rotary or non-rotary carburated engine with not a lot of swap modifications. Any suggestions? Car would be for everday use.

Thanks,

1974rx4

please keep it rotary, it would be a shame for you to have anything else in that car. the rotary's are a lot of fun, and are actually very reliable since they only have 3 moving parts. but you have to be religious about changing your oil every 3000 miles, otherwise they will poop on you

the rough idle sounds like you have a bad carb. when i first got my rx2, the floats in the carburetor would stick sometimes. and if i try'd to take a right hand turn, i had to be on the gas otherwise it would die

the smoke could be a couple things.

1) sometimes when my rotary sits for a while, it blows lots of smoke on start up. but if ive been using it as my daily driver like i do in the summertime, i have no problems.

2) it might just be time for a rebuild, bad seals

3) water in your fuel? you might have gotten a little in there. its an old car it happens

This guy is right, under no circumstance should you swap it with a non rotor engine, the one you have is fixable, the idle problem is a carb problem along with electrical, same happened to my sedan rx2, rite now the carb is currently being rebuilt because one jet was not shooting gas constantly, reagrdless you should just stick with your 13B and check the Carburator first and if not rebuild =)

Folks, thanks for all the help. Car is being transported to Toronto for engine rebuild and no mods. Keeping it original.

Try Adjusting the idle mistures on the carb so it runs smoother.

Hope this helps
