I wanted to know if anyone's ever painted their wheels and how they prepped them. I want to paint my original spare set of rims since the coat is flaking off. I found this stuff in a can by Dupli-Color that I was going to use. For prep, I was going to sand them with my finishing sander (thats all I have).

Anyone done this?

I would only use CAR PAINT

Start from the inside out, to prevent runs. Paint in a well ventalated

area and is a 60-80 area is good for most paints.

Dont paint the valve stem, and dont paint the ther outside where the tire

it, it would all flake off into the tire anyway.

a long time ago I spray canned a set of rims, I used scotchbrite and soapy water to prep them. They lasted a long time even though they were on a white limo and they seen severe use.

You can also take and have them sandblasted for the best results.

I have since painted rims but I sandblast and put primer and paint and sometimes clear on them using a spray gun and DuPont paints.

I dont have tires on them so thats not a problem and they are spare wheels so it doesnt have to be perfect. I like the sandblast idea if its cheap. They also have a clear coat in the can too, not sure if I should use that after a couple coats of the paint? Thanks for the info.

how would i do it if i have the tires on?

mask the tires off with tape.

If you are painting them a solid color dont bother with the clear coat.

You should also get some wax/silicone cleaner to clean off the rims before sanding and before painting.

I painted a set of wheels for my WRX. Clean/degreased them, lightly sanded them (~220 grit), then painted them with a $5 can of paint that I got at Home Depot. It was a Rustoleum "Hard Hat". It's lasted a couple of years with no real degredation, except for where my wife curbed the car. *grrr*
