What's the widest size tire i can cram onto my 16x7 rims for dragging? Also what are some good drag radials that you reccomend. I'm only going to replace my rear tires so i can afford something a bit more expensive tire wise.

Drag Radial makers:

BF Goodrich

The only size they have for 16s will fit on your wheel, but it's pretty tall. Might be hard to launch hard because of that, unless you actually buy that nitrous you mentioned in the other thread. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Mickey Thompson

Same size available, new this year with a radial.

Nitto

I know someone with these who isn't too impressed with the traction, even on a 3500lb 4wd car. They only have one size for 16s as well, a little shorter than the others.

I know a couple people who are going to try out R-compound roadrace / autocross tires on the strip this year, you can buy those in a million different sizes.

Falken Ziex ze-512, 225/50R16. I have them on my car, they hook up like you wouldnt believe, but they have polyester ply sidewalls instead of steel belts so they dont have very good handling. If you are looking for a drag tire, this one rocks, i can drop at 4000 rpm with NO tire spin, perfect launch everytime. Hope this helps. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blush.png

4000 rpm launch...lmfao. I launch my Nitto 555R's(275/40) at 6000 rpms with a slight chirp/wheel spin.

I've got 55's on my car now and all the drag radials i can find are 50's. I may end up having to get fronts as well :(

Also can i even consider stuffing 255's on a 7 inch wide rim if its just for drag use or is that out of the question.

I did and it said that the 50's were tall. What's that mean? They ahve a shorter sidewall height than my current tires.

TYSON 06-28-2004 02:24 PM

If you've got 225 /55 /16 tire on your car right now that's pretty close, fronts and backs don't have to be the same height.

the 50 means the sidewall is 50 percent as tall as the tire is wide.

255 (10") X 0.50 + 16 + 255 (10") X 0.50 = 26" tall tire

225 (8.9") X 0.55 + 16 + 225 (8.9") X 0.50 = 25.8" tall tire

Dramon_Killer 06-28-2004 02:44 PM

Oh wow, i always thought that it was a set height. thx.

TYSON 06-28-2004 02:50 PM

The BFGs say they will go on a 7" wide wheel.

A taller tire willl be harder to start out of the hole, thanks to the larger diameter and better traction. It also has more inertia to accelerate.

I'm talking a 5-10% difference though, if you've got big power the better traction likely outweighs the higher load.
