I live in Chico and I have a '76 RX-4 and several SA RX-7's. If you want to take a trip to Chico and compare parts, you can PM me.

Mazda rotary sales ran into a problem in 1974 due to the EPA giving them bad press. The result was that the Mazda 1975 line was really 1974's that hadn't been imported yet. The 1974 parts for the RX-4 are the same as the 1975. (Assuming they didn't make changes towards the end of 75 after the 74's had run out.) Mazda never imported a piston engined version of the RX-4 like they did for the RX-2 (616 was the piston engined version) and RX-3. (818 was the piston engined version) The bodies were the same except for grills and tail lights. (and speed!!) The Cosmo looks similar in size and overall shape to the RX-4, but was a completely different car. If the color in your pictures is correct (Mazda's kind of light violet? I think they called it Iris Blue?) You have the same color as my wife's.

The EPA had tested the Mazda rotary for fuel economy using the computer with the same probe in the tailpipe test used with piston engine cars. (they never actually road tested them!) The results were that the EPA decided that the rotaries (The RX-3's 12a was the model tested) only gave 10-14 mpg instead of the 30 mpg claimed by Mazda. The problem was that the rotary is about 3 times as efficient as a comparable piston engine and so the test results were wrong. Mazda sent out surveys to all 73 RX-3 owners (I was one) asking them to log their fuel mileage and send it to Mazda for use in their lawsuit against the EPA. I was getting better than 30 mpg (when I kept my foot out of it!!) as were most owners. Mazda won the suit, but the press did its normal thing. "Mazda lies about fuel mileage" was front page news. "Mazda proves EPA wrong" got page 42 lower right corner of the page. Needless to say sales died and never recovered. That's why the rotary sedans and REPU stopped being imported. It didn't change until they brought in the RX-7 in 1979 as a trial and all of us rotorheads snapped them up.

My 74 RX-4 was a nice car. I bought it for my wife from the showroom floor. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it was a 3 spd automatic. She didn't drive stick. (I tried to teach her on my RX-3, but she wasn't interested in learning.) Even with the automatic it gave 24 mpg @ 70 mph on the highway and topped out at about 110 mph. (and would blow the doors off of any 4 cylinder sedan stupid enough to race it.)

The Mazda 929 was the piston version of the RX4 and all body parts are interchangeable. The engine and transmission is the same as the RX5 (Cosmo) and rotary engine pick up (REPU). Suspension pieces can be found at Rare Parts. When it comes to finding parts, the internet is your friend.
