I am looking @ an 87 rx7 for a project car. I looked at it last night but it was to dark. I am going back today and I was wondering what to look for.

Here is what I have been told so far..

1987 factroy turbo car with non turbo B engine installed when the original blew up..

LSD read end. Interior looks great. Rear drivers side 1/4 panel is rusted and was bondoed and is now peeling off.

Dosent run because it sat for a while and when it was driven a hose had been dry rotted so the coolant leaked out and thee car was driven for 1-2 miles without coolant.

I want to make this a turbo car what are my options and what should I look fro?

PS. I was a honda certified tech and also a chrysler certified tech. I have worked on and modded everything from 60's v8s to my current 93 3000gt vr4 twin turbo.

I have never worked on a rotary engine but I will be doing everything myselfwith the help o my wife..

I have been searching and I was wondering where to find the engine code to see if in fact this is an na motor

and also wondering how the VIN will tell me wheather or not it was a factory turbo car.

My two cents:

Non-turbo cars are plentiful and cheap--especially broken ones. If this one was a factory turbo car, does it have all the turbo stuff to go with it? i.e. does it still have pressure sensor, bypass valve, turbo and manifold, intercooler, etc. etc. With an n/a motor and none of the turbo stuff, it really doesn't have much over an n/a.

Not sure of the VIN, but turbo cars had an aluminum hood, with a scoop. N/a's came with no scoop and a steel hood.

I think $500 is a lot to pay for a non-running n/a car with a non-perfect body.

If you want a turbo car, it's best (IMO) to start with a turbo car. If this one has all (or most) of the turbo-related bits, then I might consider it, otherwise, I'd be looking for another one.

Well I just picked up a straight 86 NA RX 7 GXl blow struts, injection issues, and trashed exhaust for 300$ I drove it home from where I bought it which was 145 miles away. So IMO think 500 is a little steep, possibly try offering 150 or 200.

I bought a 87 n/a for 500$ and not running... Bought off a friend so I know all about the car though. 60K miles on rebuilt motor from the factory... Fuel lines were rusted out; replaced and runs now. Needed alot of adjusting but got alot done. Its Almost running normal :/ Im happy with it. Look for rust underneath.... That was a problem with my car from sitting for 5 years.

did you drive it without coolant or you even know if it even runs? Id make sure it runs or at least has good compression on the motor.
