Yes both, Oil and water. Water helps save the bearings as it doesnt allow the temps to get as high when the car quits circulating oil after shut off. The water inside will only get but so hot keeping the temps down a bit better. Thats why turbo timers on the combo water and oil cooled turbos are not as much a necessity.

haha, my bad I thought you meant water to air intercooler.. I would think both would be better, that would mean more cooling..

this is harrison,... i was on apexkw's name earlier
yea i know both are better for the bearings and all that, why is it that some turbos don't have it though? like my friends rx6 is oil only... isn't the gt35/40 that way too... maybe it has someting to do with ball bearings? i dunno... it will be for the street, and not driven all the time, i figured it some other big turbos you guys are using aren't watercooled why should i spend the extra 80 bucks and time running the coolant hoses (not that that takes much time mind you!). harrison |

It costs more to make a water cooled CHRA, it is more benificial, so it costs more to buy. Mine has both, but it is an expensive turbo anyway https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/wacko.png
I have a touring model and therefore only have 1 oil cooler, so I hooked up the water. I consider this another stike against the HKS T51. Oil cooled only, poor manifold design, undivided turbine and crazy money. Whoah, 4 strikes, you were out on the LAST pitch! |
If you go water, make sure that you keep an eye on the temperature, as we all know the stock cooling system is barely able to do its job with the stock system in place, much less the added requirements of a large single.

I think the body of a single turbo would add less heat to the coolant than the stock turbos, with the simplified design. I think some people have stated they found this with their own cars after the change over.
I would rather have the heat going into my coolant than my oil, since I have an upgraded radiator anyway. I can also monitor my water temperature easier than my oil temp. |
