Well now that I finally got my wastegate in the mail I figured I should finish my exh manifold https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Here is the best that I can come up with so far but I'm not sure it's the best way to do it so thats why I'm asking you guys https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png How would you do it?

In the second pic you can see that I have the WG runners tilted a little bit to give it a little bit of a "Y" transiton. I would like to tilt it a little bit more but it would hit the turbine housing if I went any farther. Do you think the exhaust will have to make too many turns to enter the wastegate if I did it this way and cause boost control issues?? (keeping in mind that there will be one more 90 deg fitting to connect to the wastegate)

So basically what would you do in my situation?

thanks

-Cam

hmm.. after looking at it maybe I should use two 45's instead of 90's where it comes off the main runners? It would maybe help take a way some of the bends.

vosko 03-29-2003 04:51 PM

you can't put it on the bottom ?

setzep 03-29-2003 05:20 PM

Nope, idler arm and tie rod is in the way. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png I'd like to keep the WG located how it is in the pic's so the diaphragm is pointed downward. This way it's out of most of the heat vs it pointing up and being exposed to more heat.

I'm going to head out to the garage and try another configuration, I'll let you know how it turns out.

turbovr6 03-29-2003 05:30 PM

leave it open, dump it to the street!

94touring 03-29-2003 08:52 PM

Hmm, well its defenitly different. I'd just try to have maybe like two 45 degree angles like you mentioned. Or better yet, instead of using two pipes from each exhaust pipe on the header, tie it right below the flange so you only have to use one pipe and have it angled down below the manifold. Or two pipes like my manifold, which has them on the bottom side.

How do you mean? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

BTW, nice manifold. Did you make it? Very professional.

j9fd3s 03-29-2003 11:19 PM

hey cam, put the turbo on, and pretend the dp is there, i think that will make placing the wg a lot easier

setzep 03-29-2003 11:46 PM

Placing the WG was the easy part it's just finding the best way to "tap" into the main runners to feed the WG that I'm contemplating.

94touring 03-30-2003 06:09 AM

My manifold is HKS. Here is a pic to show where I would weld the pipe for the wastegate. I'd try to use a couple angles like my manifold has to clear anything in the way, and make sure the turbo and downpipe aren't going to interfear either.

94touring 03-30-2003 06:14 AM

Well and just looking at your setup again, looks like you will need to place it on the other side of the manifold, like my pink circle shows here.

setzep 03-30-2003 10:48 AM

I don't know if using one pipe off the two is all that good of an idea for my situation because it's so close to the turbo flange and it would be very hard to form the pipe to joint the two pipes. Also I'd kind of like to keep the pulses as seprate as possible. I think if I tap into the manifold a little earlier the gasses that go into the turbo will be a little more laminar.

j9fd3s 03-30-2003 09:19 PM

what about if you use your location, setzep, and tilt the pipe over a bit more towards the turbo?

mike

setzep 03-31-2003 07:09 PM

At that height i can't tilt it over any more because it will hit the turbine housing. I'm working on another idea now that will allow better transition and be shorter so I can angle it more. Once I get it sorted I'll post a pic.

Dragon 04-01-2003 09:52 AM

just run the two pipes like the HKS manifold has back in to one to the WG flange and put it on the top where you were planning to.. That should work great and keep the ex pulses seperated better...

setzep 04-01-2003 06:27 PM

I want the WG runners to be equal length so I don't get any "favorable" exh bleed from one exh port. What I have in my head right now might be kind of tricky so I may end up making it like the HKS only on the top side of the main runners after all.

Well after thinking of about 20 different ways to do it this is what I chose.

I didn't want to do it this way but in the end I think it was just about the only way I could considering clearance issues. I don't think it turned out all that bad, better than the way I was going to do it at first.

Masking tape is my friend https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

So what do you guys think? Will it work? Should I make any changes before I break out the TIG?

One more, shows the angle the WG runners sit on the Main runners.

94touring 04-06-2003 12:45 PM

Looks good to me.

setzep 04-06-2003 09:20 PM

worked on it all day today and FINALLY it's done! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

I like this pic the best cause it shows I'm making progress! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif bout time!

j9fd3s 04-07-2003 02:35 PM

cool, yeah it would be nice to see that thing run this summer, what ecu are you gonna use?

mike

vosko 04-07-2003 03:21 PM

looks great ! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

setzep 04-07-2003 04:59 PM

Mike- if Haltech ever makes any more E11's I'd like one of those, hopefully they will start pumping them out soon! Summer is almost here! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

Vosko- thanks https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png Oh yeah, I found a "17" stamped on my turbine housing and there is also a 17 cast into it right on the inlet. So maybe yours is the 22 or 24cm housing?

vosko 04-07-2003 05:07 PM

i dunno box said

who knows if my turbo ever has to come off i'll investigate https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

setzep 04-07-2003 06:02 PM

yeah, if it ever has to come off check in the areas I found my numbers.

MazdaMike 04-07-2003 06:12 PM

thats pretty good work, i was always curious, what does TIG stand for?

setzep 04-07-2003 06:59 PM

Tungsten Inert Gas.
