Anyone else ever melt a turbine housing? I had a P 0.70 (turbonetics) for a while...it was damaged the first time I started running it hard. Boost response was suddenly alot worse. Inside you can see where the iron had started to run. I replaced it with a P 0.84 (garret) from a diesel which has been holding up fine.

So I'm wondering if different manufacturers use different alloys or something?

What EGT's are you running?

I've seen 1050C or over 1900F EGT's at lean cruise with no ill effects.

Inconel is the material of choice for most modern turbo turbine housings, and this stuff can take EGT's surpassing 2000F no problem.

Other, less costly stuff, than Inconel are still heavy nickel composites made to take the high heat of the exhaust gases.

Not sure about EGT - I don't have a probe in the manifold. I gave up on measuring EGT a while back because it took too long for the reading to stabilize.



The damaged 0.70 housing shows substantial internal flaking, which doesn't seem to have occurred with the 0.84 housing.



If it's an EGT problem, it may be either that the timing isn't advance enough, or that the 0.70 AR is insufficient (speculation. How much difference is there in 1 AR size?)



Who makes Inconel turbine housings, and where can I get one? My 0.70 is a Turbonetics, and was under $200 as I recall so I would assume it's standard nickel/iron.

No, it's actual melted iron. Maybe I can get some pics. The rear scroll actually has a split down the middle (starting at the innermost end), and has a smooth, melted look. The front is probably the same but I need to get a mirror in there to see better.

There is some flaking on the outside of the housing.

The housing that melted isn't that old. The 0.84 that is working fine was old to begin with and had a crack in the divider at the inlet flange (hasn't gotten worse with use).

Looking at the housing again, I see a white paint mark. I had marked the

housing with a white paint marker so I could index it correctly.... and

the paint did _not_ burn off despite glowing temperatures. It didn't

even flinch. Then I made a heatshield and installed it, at which point

the paint began to disappear. Anyway maybe my heat shield had contributed

to the overheating. I haven't used it since.

I should find that paint marker - I could paint my whole exhaust system with

it.
