I have a 8 -10 foot peice of 1 1/2" id stainless pipe in the garage. can it be used for anything, oh, and the sidewalls are THICK like, 1/4". Can I use this to build a manifold? if not, what could I use? is the prebent stuff in the autoparts stores worth anything?

I also have a big peice of 2 1/2" id stainless, that is polished https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png Thats gonna be intercooler piping.

1/4" thick wall steel tubing, hrm, sounds like a ballast weight er i mean font bumper support from a old porsche.

venomrx7 03-13-2004 09:58 PM

yea, its heavy. lol, but the stock one is no light weight!!

but, will it work?

Cheers! 03-13-2004 10:09 PM

why wouldnt it?

good luck bending it, you will need a decent welder to get penetration on 1/4" steel too. I don't recommend using it for this purpose personally, get something thinner, easier to work with, and lighter.

venomrx7 03-13-2004 10:17 PM

thats kinda what I figured, what can I use that would work better? and how thick do my plates need to be where it bolts to the engine or turbo?

GarageBoy 03-13-2004 10:56 PM

If you can, Inconel or 304 S.S. ? (i think that's the good stuff)

haha, good luck welding that ****.

1.25" is too small ID main runners. 1/4" wall is over kill also. I made mine out of 304" sch 10 pipe. It has a wall thickness of 1/8 and is cheep. I got the weld els from mcmaster.com for 4-5 bucks a piece and went to the local steel yard and picked up the pipe for cheep also. I made my flanges from 1/2" 304. I'd stick to 1/2 so it won't warp as easy when you weld it.

Thanks!! is there somewhere I can get prebent? I don't have access to a bender https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png

just buy mandrel bent elbows, cut & weld. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

setzep 03-14-2004 09:11 AM

The weld els I was talking about are cast "mandrel" bent pieces, cheep and as durable as you can get.

I guess its time for a trip to the industrial supply store, what grade of steel or stainless is best without costing an arm and a leg?

setzep 03-15-2004 07:21 PM

I like 304L schedule 10 pipe because it's cheep and easy to weld

venomrx7 03-15-2004 07:41 PM

cool beans, so it tig welding better on a manifold?

setzep 03-16-2004 09:23 PM

Yup, TIG worked awsome. Most of my manifold I just fusion welded, only used a little filler rod here and there..

venomrx7 03-16-2004 10:39 PM

cool beans, I'll post pics when it starts coming together
