Ok, I'm thinking about converting to the Apexi single turbo kit. I've heard it spools nicely and I'd like to ditch the twins.

I live in California and as you now the smog tests are a bitch here.

I don't think any smog techs would notice or care that the turbo is different. My concern is that it appears that the air injection goes into the stock turbo manifold and that the aftermarket manifold won't accomodate this. This would be noticed by most smog techs.

Anyone have any experience in single turbo smog issues?

Thanks,

John Magnuson

The new apexi rx6 kit retains the airpump, so you are good to go.

I think the new rx6 is the only one that still retains the air pump isn't it? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

Things you could do.

rx6 new kit- Retains the stock airpump. Route the wastegate to the downpipe and get a RP high flow CAT. Will work. EXPENSIVE.

Get GT 35/40(already routed to dumppipe)get an electric airpump from corvette and make a bracket and bolt it to where the stock airpump would be(much smaller and plastic)just as fast spool up and smog legal. Good luck. Just my .02. LESS expensive

Hmmm... interesting.... thanks guys!

So I was incorrect, the air pump does not connect in any way to the stock exhaust manifold?

If I remember correctly it ties back into the main cat. I have heard the main cat will go bad quickly once you remove the airpump, unless you upgrade to a highflow or midpipe.

No, it does not tie into the stock exhaust manifold at all, it does however inject fresh air into the cat. The apexi kit allows you to keep the airpump like others have confirmed. I have the HKS TO4E kit myself and it also allows you to keep the airpump, the whole kit is designed to work with the whole air pump system. It comes with all the necessary air hose connections and provides you with new hoses where needed, the kit was easy to install and the instructions were actually easy to follow. HTH..

Do bigger turbos (T78, T51R KAI/SPL) also retain the airpump and how are they on smog testing?

djgiantrobot 03-19-2003 06:51 PM

I dunno about the t78, but the T51r kai kit keeps the air pump. The SPL is a little big for a 13b imo
