First T60-1 lasted almost a full year driving and was lost due to kinked Oil return line. Upon tear down it was clear that the turbo was starving of oil. Every thing looked burnt up. My bad and a costly lesson. Also, was running a restrictor pill in the oil line.

Now, only after 6 months my Second T60-1 (rebuild of original) has just bit the dust as well. This time around we addressed the oil return line with quality SS braided line and AN fittings. Lack of oil was clearly Not an issue this time around. Immediately upon removal of the air filter I noticed turbine blade eating into the housing and Major shaft play (up and down).

Removed the V-Band and inspected the rear and found tons of oil lining the exhaust housing and again major shaft play. On this setup, we did away with the restrictor pill in the oil line to ensure plenty of oil flow.

So, what the hell happened this time around ?? 6 months and only driving the car on th weekends should put the mileage on this turbo at No More than 3500 miles !!!!!!!! That's just plain sickening. What could've cause the turbo failure this time around ??

10 psi daily with 16 psi. max boost. Street tuned by the Man himself..........Stevo Kan. Car ran beautiful while the turbo lasted.

i had a similar problem, my turbo lasted only 10 minutes before total oil blow out 3 times in a row ,,,,, yes 3 rebuilds . turns out it was my fault for not having good enuff engine block breathing. check to see if your motor is breathing enuff ie a well vented catch can or something like that.

Well....His new turbo just blew ....one day after it was installed!

He ask me to drive it to see why this .70 turbine and 60-1 turbonetics hi flow was slow on boost. When I did some full throttle runs it would start quick spool @4600RPM in 3rd but @ 5,000 in 1st. There is something amiss with such a small turbo. I kept hearing the whined up which I thought could also be a high side leak

cause it only happens under load and boost. Mark57's T66 out spools this thing.

It blew yesterday on the way home from a rotorhead party.

He has a carb jet as a restrictor(dont know the size) and some screen filter.

Any brainstorming ideas? This is the second good turbo gone.

As l8t Apex stated.............New turbo installed yesterday and a total of 2 hrs. worth of drive time on it, this new one let out a cloud of white smoke. UnF###ing believable. The turbo came with a jet carb in it already. It's got to be an oil issue.......but too much or too little ?? Going to put an oil pressure gauge on that line to see what the hell is going on.

Oh...turbo that just went was a Brand Spankin new Turbonetics T60-1 Hifi.

White smoke is usually not oil... when turbo seals go its usually black or a hazy grey smoke. If you're certain its your oil seals in the turbo, then it sounds like you're running way too much oil. These things need surprisingly little oil to keep them happy. I'd run the symptoms by turbonetics and talk to them about it, and see if its getting too much oil, causing rapid seal failure. I know a friend who runs a similar turbo, oil only CHRA (non-water-jacketed) and uses an AN -4 line for the feed and still needs a restrictor pill. The drain is AN -10 and he's got a very very well vented crankcase. All of that was necessary to avoid running too much oil in through his turbo.

What pressure does your oiling system normally operate at, btw?

Turbomark7 05-31-2005 10:46 AM

It's blue smoke.

This is starting to scare me a lot. I guess I need to lookup the restrictor pill I purchased and see if this is going to make me have a healthy turbo...

What's all this about engine breathing?

Just make sure you don't block off those vents on the center housing and the oil filler neck. Vent them to a catch can or back into the intake (before the turbo inlet), and make sure your turbo oil drain is very large (AN -10 or so) and smoothly flows continually downhill into the oil pan. If you got that down, you should be fine.

Turbonetics honored the warranty no questions asked. They inspected the turbo and said they found some debris inside the turbo. Then they said the fitting where the restrictor pill goes contains a filter and that that fitting had been changed or was a diff. fitting altogether. I know for a fact that we didn't change a thing on it. We installed it just like it came and sent it back exactly like we received it.

Nevertheless, failure was due to debris getting into the turbo. They said they found some silicone and debris...... I don't know what "debris" exactly could have gotten in there. Oil was pretty damn fresh so I don't know what got in there.

badass7 06-24-2005 11:57 PM

As for silicon.......the guy that installed it has been installing turbos for years so I don't know how that got in there either. Oil was pretty damn fresh too.

I am very impressed with Turbonetics and how they honored the warranty no questions asked. They also tore the turbo down and rebuilt it within 1 week ! It should be shipping back Monday. Not many other turbo co's offer tht kind of service.
