i looked on the back of the compressor wheel and noticed what i'm guessing looks to be removed material for balancing. i disassembled it just to look around and what not and now i'm wondering if i need to bring it somewhere to have it properly put back together to be in balance. so does the wheel have to be aligned in conjunction with the turbine or does it matter?

The factory turbo componets are suppose to be balanced, it doesnt mean that when its all put together it would be balanced as an assembly. I usually mark the oriention of the turbine wheel to the compressor wheel, just in case. But i've also just put it back together and have never had any problems.

you should have it balanced

All of the components are balanced separatley so just taking it apart and putting it back together will not hurt anything. I have made several high flo turbines by swapping out the front half.



You will need to be accurate int eh position of the all three peices so that the oil and water lines are in the proper place as well as the accuator and snail are pointing the right direction.



Once again there is no need to get it balanced.

ok, i guess i misworded my question, i meant to ask if it had to be "aligned." of course being the noob i am i didn't mark the positions of the turbine wheel to the compressor, i'm assuming i have to bring it in now.

I took my stock turbo apart and pieced it back together with other turbo parts once. I had 3 bad turbo's with 3 good parts in each of them. One had a good center cartridge but a bad exhaust wheel, one had a good exhaust wheel but the center cartridge and compressor wheel were bad and one had a great compressor wheel/housing but the previous owner decided to shoot apex seals at the exhaust wheel. I took 3 different parts out of 3 different turbo's and made one good turbo....and ran it HARD at 15 psi for over 2 years...engine blew up after the next owner got it, but the turbo's!(except for the exhaust wheel) were still good

If you car is using the stock intercooler, the whole turbo will have to be alignedl. If not it wont bolt onto the manfiold, oil and water lines and the intercooler. Try a test fit before youi bolt it back on.
