Okay I've been looking around for a long time for a good turbo setup for my car. I've found it pretty mind bogling. Can some of you guys please tell me what would be the best setup for my 90 s5 TII? What trim? What size wheel? and so on. Also could you please give me a brief explination of all these things? I was thinking about going with an HKS t04e or a turbonetics rebuild to a 60-1 hifi. What do you think? Would either of these still leave me with good streetability, but give me some high power numbers? I was thinking that when I was finished with the car that I could atleast get about 375rwhp out of it. Do you think either of these could push the power numbers that I want. Just for your info I was planning on doing a mild street port with 3mm apex seals after getting the turbo. Which means I would be running it on a stock motor(2mm seals, no port job) for a little while at about 10 to 13 psi. I know that I probably wouldn't put out 375 rwhp like that, so please tell me what's the best one for me. Thanks.

i had an upgraded 89turbo (its a t04 compressor on the stock exhaust side) on my t2, and i loved it.

stock lag, and it had power as far as i wanted to rev it (no dropoff like stock). its now on a ported motor and it runs out of steam at about 6500 rpm.

i was running 10-13psi and it was fast (i think about 250rwhp?)

i had a upgraded 89 Turbo also. its fun.... but if you want more than 250rwhp you need to goto a full T04 and manifold and wastegate etc .... $$$$$$

That's cool. Does anybody know anything else that I should consider?

well, the most important things to think about are

1. do you need to keep the airpump?

2. do you want a good street setup, or do you want to drive it to the track and run 11's?

3. how much $$ do you have to play with, manifolds and external wastegates get pricey ($1000-1500)

airpump is gone. I'm thinking mid 12's would be good. Keep in mind that this is my daily driver.

Mid 12's SHOULD be able to be done with a stock upgraded turbo. They're good for close to 300 RWHP if everything else is done right. That would probably be around 17 PSI or so. A custom setup would be able to yield over 400 RWHP at 17 PSI.

Good luck trying to get over 350 RWHP with the stock computer. It'll be time for a Haltech then, or something to that extent. you can't get a full blown TO4 E,B,S,R without a aftermarket manifold of some sort. then you're gonna have to make a DP for it, and don't forget about the wastegate. It'll all add up. The Hybrids should net you 12's granted you can attain decent traction. Luis Laracuente bought my G-Force chip and got himself a Hybrid turbo. @ 15 psi on the stock J-Spec he ran 12.6's consistently.

Also take a look at the V-spec Intercooler, by Greddy, it's made to fit a stock turbo. that shouls cool things off quiet a bit. I like it better than my Greddy.

going from na to 300hp is a big jump

Yeah, I know what you mean. Ever since I had the T-78 everything seems slow, but that's just me. I drove a 300 HP 323 GT that was pretty fast. Those FWD cars handle funny with alot of power.

j9fd3s 11-07-2002 03:19 PM

haha, a 300hp 323! thats crazy, did it jerk the wheel out of your hands?

What horsepower would a stock series 5 turbo engine put down with a weber Carb on it, supposing it is jetted correctly and tuned right?

j9fd3s 11-07-2002 03:37 PM

with porting it would be a little more than 200rwhp

mike

75 Repu 11-07-2002 03:39 PM

So i would probably get more power if I ran it with Fuel injection?

It was a 323 GT with the 1.8 L swap and a Garrett GT 25/30. That torque steer takes some getting used to, but I was ok with it. Supposedly the car dynoed at about 230 HP at 12 PSI. I drove it at 16 PSI.

without a doubt you will make more power, and it'll be easier to tune. N/A to anything above 200 HP is a significant jump. but tuning with the high compression rotors will have your hands full at higher boost levels above 10 psi. Good luck, the more low end torque will be real rewarding.
