Pardon my ultimate Noob-sim, but a friend of mine just bought a '91 FC with a 13B single turbo and has asked me to re-time the car as it is waaayyy out of wack. I am an auto mechanic and have timed many cars before, but i havnent the first clue on how to time a rotary engine. Can anybody here point me in the right direction?

um its really just like every other car, well mostly.

if you do a search, the shop manual is on the internet, but here's the cliff note version

on the main pulley, there are two marks, LEADING and TRAILING. if you're standing on the drivers side of the car, and turning the engine clockwise, the LEADING mark is the first one. they are painted at the factory, but after 20years it might not be there.

on the front cover there is a little pin. its again on the drivers side, kind of inline with the CRANK ANGLE SENSOR.

on a 91 there is a little green 1 pin connector by the battery (left front), warm the engine up, turn it off, ground the connector, restart.

the leading coil pack is by the battery, either wire should work ok. shine the light at the pulley, and the LEADING mark should be lined up with the pin on the front cover. if its not move the CAS like a distributor. if everything is assembled right the cas should just a little off center.

next put the timing light on the front wire of the other coil pack by the brake master, TRAILING. this one should fire on the OTHER timing mark in the pulley. give or take. this one is not adjustable, if its way off or firing on the leading mark, its a symptom of a bad/out of adjustment TPS.

if the car does not idle well enough to run like this, set the CAS on center, and turn it clockwise just a tad, you can also use the timing light without grounding the plug but RPM has to stay under 1000.
