I could be wrong, but I think all HKS turbos are Garrett units. So if you come up with all the specs you can order it from Garrett and save yourself some money. This is what the Supra guys say about this turbo. . .

This is HKS's biggest single turbo that is commonly sold, although it isn't THAT much bigger than the T04R. Probably in between the T66 and T70 in size, the T51R makes full boost in the 5k range, and no one has really been able to realize its full power potential...I wouldn't be surprised at seeing 800+ rwhp from a T51R under the right circumstances... very strong turbo but i wouldn't use it on a street car personally.

Coming from someone that loves big turbos (I have a T70), and can't see why anyone would stick with twins, that is a ******* HUGE turbo. You will have substantial lag, and therefore make your car very gear sensitive. I could only see using it for all out drag or bragging rights, but if you want it go for it. Just make sure you can run the kind of psi that thing was made for. If you're gonna put around below 20-25psi, then you should reconsider.

On a side note I downloaded a video a few years ago of a black T51R Supra street racing a 5.0 Mustang with a 351 and N2O. That Supra sounded evil and tore it a new one from 4th gear on.

just go gt42rbb much better turbo on a rotary

CletusFD3S 10-06-2005 10:07 PM

yes they are mostly all Garret, i beleve they use a diffrent compresser housing and wheel... something like that.

The two T51 versions ARE the two GT42 sizes. The T51 just uses different housings.

t51 isnt divided either. looks great for a 20b though...

HKS does indeed use garrett componets, however you can't call up garrett and just order this up. HKS and Garrett Have that agreement. The KAI version of the T-51 is similiar(based) to a garrett gt42r, the SPL version of the T-51 is similiar(based) to a garrett gt45R. There are many differences between HKS and Garrett units. One of these is the manifolds, HKS is using a v-band while the garrett uses t4. HKS has a compressor surge channel in the compressor housing, this is good and bad. Meaning, turbo should not back spin(compressor surge), however it cuts down on the efficiency fo the turbo. HKS units are spose to be able to out spool the Garrett unit, but honestly who knows. My advise to you sir, Stay away from the SPL, just get the KAI, it will be more than enough.

I saw that video, that Supra was evil. Though typical 60ft. slouch....

Anyways, I agree about the T51R being to slow. Its not practical unless you design the car to take advantage of the size. Its not a plug and play turbo like some of the smaller units.

If you want something big but is still functional for a street car look at the T-70 or T78.

My 2cents.

I don't know much about the T78s (I've heard they are smaller than a T70), but my T70 is very streetable. It's not the peppiest at normal driving speeds (2-3,000rpms), but hey driving in vacuum is great on gas and keeps you out of trouble. And if you want to get on it all you have to do is downshift to the appropriate gear, and watch the boost shoot up . . . and up . . . and up . . .

Honestly, even on pump gas with a shitty tune there's more power by 5,000rpms than you will ever really need on the street. But hey, turbos are like your manhood; having the biggest one on the block is nice, but you've gotta be able to use it too.
