Trying to get my Type R dialed in for my FD....currently, I am getting some compressor surge, so I assumed to soften it up some. I went ahead and took the valve off and went to adjust it softer, and it is almost as soft as it can get.....I mean like 1-2 rotations away from having no pressure. So my question is what can I do about this, or what could be causing this?

The top nipple is where I have my pressure source line running and the bottom nipple is open to atmosphere. Now I am running a 60-1 at around 12psi....I was using an Apex'i Twin Chamber, worked great, no problems....now with the Type R, it is just not reacting properly. Is it just too much BOV for a 12psi single? I have a TIAL sitting in my garage, but have to get around to haivng the flanges adapted and wekded on to make it work, which I will do if I have to....but I was jus curious about trying to get the one I have on the car to work properly.

Any help would be appreciated.

some of the type r bovs need both vacum sorces hooked up the type r heavy duty .i run a type r standard on my car and have had zero problems. checkto make sure there is no other problems with the car. i am running 10 pis in my car , have the bov adjusted tight . not loose like you are trying to do.

I had an Apex'i Twin Chamber and M2 Large before and it worked fine.....then switched to a Greddy FMIC and Type R....and I just can't get it dialed in properly.

I thought about trying it at around half in to see how it would react, but I didn't want to adversely effect my car any more....would tightening it up some help it open faster?

It also may depend on what spring you have in it. I know greddy makes a pretty stiff spring for it. Not sure what the spring rate is right off though.

i had the same problem and the only way i got rid of the compressor surge is having the adjustment screw all the way up....ill try the vac source on both nipples

i've been using the same type R bov for a while now. just have to adjust it drive it adjust it a little drive it....mine gets a little compressor surge which is fine...

I had no problems when i had the twins on. Now i got a 62-1 and i get a little bit of surge below 3500rpm, but no problems above that. Havent softened it up either. I have had to replace the o ring twice so far.

Which spring do you have in it???

The GReddy Type-R BOV comes standard with the "stiff" spring.

You need to order the softer "std." spring and swap them out.

The stiff spring doesn't budge under 20psi!!!

BTW, using the bottom / angled fitting doesn't do jack **** to it's operation, unless you're running closed-loop.

That fitting just "leaks" into the BOV outlet.

Blow into it and you can hear it venting into the BOV outlet.

yea the type-r's "stock" configuration is for highboost situations.

hmmm it doesnt budge below 20psi... i dont plan on being over 20psi too often

FikseRxSeven 06-06-2005 12:48 AM

do the type r and s use the same size spring?

To the original poster, it sounds like you have the stiff spring. Switch to the standard as mentioned. You can get the standard spring from any place that can order greddy parts (greddy dealer).

To get to the spring, you will need a pair of internal/external snap ring pliers to remove the pressure/vacuum chamber. Remove the tension adjuster, place the BOV upside down, apply pressure to keep the BOV on the ground, and work the magic of the pliers. Expect the BOV to want to seperate rapidly (std spring), and near violently if fitted with the stiff spring. Swap springs, then reapply pressure to the upper and lower portions of the BOV, and refit the internal C-spring. Fit the tension adjuster, and you should be ready for action.

The stiff spring really should be used for over 25-30 psi operation, or for (verified) 50 psi alcohol motors. So, stiff = track, and standard = street.

ok, i finally dismantled the wastegate

so now i have 3 different springs

the one on the left is the type r stiff spring, the two others came when i bought a greddy type s, the right most was in the type s bov, and the middle one was not inside.

im going to be using the middle spring.

So how did that end up working out using a RS spring in the R?

Im thinking about doing the same.
