i found a cheap Fidanza short shifter but its for the 3rd gen... i think it will fit the 2nd gen tranny tho... looks exactly the same as the more expensive 2nd gen shortshifters... and the tranys should be that much different right?

The Miata 5 speed shifters are pretty much all the same. Slight revisions in 99-up models thats it. Mazda really doesn't change much over the years.

 

I just ordered a 89- 97 and it looked identical to the rx7 C's shifter.
